anyone ever try making a home made atc250r base gasket? i had mine blow out when i was riding up at silver lake and so now i need one. i have all the stuff to make one and i really dont like buying from the local ATV shop. i'd think as long as i use some hi-tack on both sides then it'd seal and hold up but i want a second opinion.

i think you would feel stupid if you wasted a topend on a $10 gasket. buy oem from service honda. I usually try to buy a couple sets so i have it when i need it.

thickness would afect port timing somewhat

as long as its the same as stock it should work

yea i would feel pretty dam stupid thats why im asking  i called the local dealer and asked if they had any for an 85atc250r, she said no and they are $9 and some change. i called back a few minutes ago, talked to someone else and had him check for an 86 trx250r base gasket (yea i know they have the SAME part number) he came back and told me they were $18.02 a piece

Go to napa and get some gasket paper. Take an old one with you so you have an idea on thickness. Lay out the old one and carefully trace and cut it with a razor blade or knife. I've done it plenty of times.

well i got the thinnest stuff they had, 1/32". i also have gasket punches and what not. there is no "old gasket" because i used hondabond 4 on it when i forst put it together :naughty:

Once i got my motor out a couple hours ago i tryed tightening the nuts holding the jug down and 3 of them turned without a whole lot of force. i think i know why the gasket blew out. antifreeze by my crank isnt good is it?

No its not, but that would mean the head was loose or letting coolant in and not just the base nuts being loose.

Sounds like you have a head gasket problem to, To be gettin coolant in there.

I personaly woudnt run a self cut gasket, Now i cant say i havent done it myself. But its always in a time cruch for a ride. and asap i put a store bought one. Gaskets are cheap and the thicknesses are proper, With the base gasket you perty much need it the same thickness, the head gasket you can get thinner or thicker to get the desiered compression.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I Can Say Is That If You Use A Good Quality Gasket, And Some Hi-tack You Will Not Have Any Problems With The Proper Torque, I Have Years Of Turning Wrenches & I Can Tell You That Porsche & Catapillar Make A Untouchable Gasket Sealer, Able To Withstand 40+ Lbs Of Boost On Turbo Engines, Your 2-stroke 250, 500, 700(atk) No Problems

I forgot about the Caterpillar gasket maker. I have a can of that right here on my table that I used to make a centercase gasket. It works phenomenally well.

not to hi-jack this thread, is the cat gasket maker better than "the right stuff" by Permatex or Suzuki 1207B?

Where do you get the Cat gasket maker? A local cat dealership?
What about head gaskets?:naughty:

I did it on my 350x, and it is still in there now. They seem much stronger (due to the thickness).

The only reason I did it, was because I could not get a gasket in time for an ATV trip.

More importantly make sure you torque properly, then re torque after a heat cycle.

Its not going to be a big deal on a 4 stroke, A 2 stroke the intake goes into the crankcase SO if there is a leak you get lean and have bad problems. On a 4 stroke you will just leak a little oil.

go buy a gasket. It's a different story if your out on a ride and something happens, I've used beer cases many times for gaskets, but theyre still available and your obviously not broke down 50 miles from town so go buy one from honda. Or if you want to play with the porting, cometic will make any thickness you want.

Anyone know of a way to make a head gasket? My dad has an old crysler out board that worked mint till he blew the head gasket up. He tried steam pressure gasket maker from the boilers on our navy ships, but it did not last.
I have used jb weld to seal blown head gaskets but there must be another way.

Head gaskets are a lot more intricate and important then a normal flat gasket. You could make one out of some thin copper sheet metal but that is the only thing I'd even be willing to consider.

How would that hold up on a outboard engine? He loves this engine and thats all it needs.
