View Full Version : Trike needs a new plug after each ride, what could it be?

My big Red (’83 atc 200E) runs great when I put a new plug in it but after I stop and the engine cools I have to put a new plug in it to get it to run. The old plug will not get a spark, the new one will get a great spark and the trike will fire first pull. The carb. is clean and a plug check looks good, The trike is 100% stock, lower hours and runs well.

To me it sounds like the stator coil but it tests to 235 ohms, spare ones that I tried were tested to be about 200 and 245 ohms. Any ideas?

I have an atc70 that does the same thing only I haven’t tested the coil yet and it bogs mid throttle when it is running.

What does the plug look like after running it?

What does the plug look like after running it?

Just putting around the yard and it will be black, a good hard ride and it will have just a hint of black on it.

some of the 200's will wear out the needle seat in the carb. Honda recommends a new needle and seat. The needle wears out the seat and causes a rich condition. A quick fix is to dop the needle one groove by moving the clip up one on the needle.

sounds electrical, I have an XL100 doing the same thing changed out the entire elecrical didn't fix it, If I pull the plug wire off instead of using the kill switch, the plug is ok, something in the ground or resistor???

My 200e was doing the same thing when I got it. Sometimes after it cool down I needed to replace the plug to restart it. But the engine had a couples of problem. First the head gasket was blown. Also I think I need to adjust the fuel level inside the carb. I think your problem is a rich condition and it fouled the plug.

does it smoke?

Doesn't smoke. After a long ride in January the plug looked great, not black at all but it still wouldn't start.

Like I said it's a lower hours machine, I bought it from the original owner who used it a few times a year and it started doing this when he had it. I have owned it for about 4 years but I only use it a few times a year as well.

Here is an idea for you, check the plug gap on plugs that seem to "foul" on you. Seen it more than once where a piston has closed the gap, or closed it enough to where it would run but wouldnt restart

Sounds like it's rich or it may have a weak spark. Best to put your brothers tongue on the spark plug and test it, he may get a slight tingle effect :)

if its not the rings(smoking) i'd say its the gap or electrical
try a hotter plug i.e. d7es instead of d8es i had to run a d7es in my old 200x or it would do the same thing
