To test a electric starter motor can I......

Talking Yamaha 225 here.

.......just hook up jumper cables from a battery and put positve on starter post and ground to frame ? Will that hurt the starter motor at all? Can I use a lawn tractor 12V battery?

(the electrical system is not functional, wires all screwed up)

as a last resort that will work and it wont hurt the starter ive done that hundreds of times....

You'll probably find it's weak. I've had 3 YTMs, and all of them have had weak starters. My Honda's have never had a problem. They sell rebuild kits, and also brand new starters on ebay, but I've never tried either.
