Hi fellow trikers!
Im back this time with a step down from my old ytm200ek that i had to get rid of. I bought a project trike yestruday its a yellow yamaha 125 or 175 im not sure yet. No engine. everything else is complete even has the carb and cords attached! minus engine and chain. I would like to know how exactly would i identify the make and year? i found the stamping on the neck of the frame yesturday night at like 11 pm but i didnt record it down. The frame is in amazing shape! Bike has the stock brand new front forks "no shocks". would do i identify the make and year from the vin code? thanks -Joe "its good to be back" :w00t:

Solid front forks and a hardtail means it is a 125. Unless some one cobbled something together.

Do you have a picture? If the roller is all original, if it just has a headlight, then it is an 80 or 81. If it has a yellow plastic cover over the headlight, then it is 82 or later. Hope that helps.

nope its not the plastic shield covered headlight its the stock metal light. Sadly i figured out i need a new rear tire "1 is in good shape" front tire is shot. so i need 2 tires so far and the engine "hopefully getting tomarrow." Today i went threw the entire bike no rust at all other then like the grab bar and the handle bars but its just surface rust. Most of the frame is original black paint not a scratch!!

125 engines are not that exspinsive, why not just get one of those?
YTM200BOY
05-24-2008, 12:29 AM
ok true it would be easy to just bolt it on. I have all the other stuff the gas tank the side oil tank im guessing? the carb, choke cable and everything just no motor. "carb looks very dirty" maybe salvagable? how much would a 125 engine run for? im looking on some sites and on ebay and i have not found an engine yet!

I know I cannot tell you what to do with your project. But if the trike is that complete, it seems like a damn shame to ruin it the way you have planned. A good biuld takes time. If you have to actually put some effort into it then it becoems worth it in the end.

today i took everything off practically except the coil pack "stripped screws" and the rear axle assembly and the brake system "works shockingly well" i need to aquire 2 new tires. Is the electrical system that simple on this bike "has original color coded wires amazingly"? everything is so compact and seems like it will be an easy project "im hoping". tommarow im going to power wash the frame and forks "in amazing shape with original black paint on the frame and yellow paint on the forks. I need some freakin' batteries so i can take pics ill get some pics up tonight hopefully. J.W. will the 175 engine fit? thanks.

The yt125 engine and yt175 engine will fit. As far as I can tell by research, a 1979 and later it175 or yt175 dirtbike engine will fit, you will just have kickstart and a manual clutch. I'm not sure about the yt125 or yt175 exhaust pipe fitting or not. I hope to have a bassani yt175 nos exhaust and my really clean yt175 exhaust will be up for grabs if needed. If you can get me a few pictures of the trike, especially the rear bearing carrier set up, I can get a better grasp of what year the trike is. Your lucky that the fuel tank is plastic and won't rust and that it takes a cover. Parts are not impossible to find and you can still get quite a few at the dealer. There were just several engines on ebay. Also being 2 stroke, they are subject to the same hop ups- higher compression pistons, porting, polishing, better reeds and the like. Also you can find aftermarket exhausts if you look long enough. I managed to find one for my yt125 and hope to have one soon for the yt175, both bassani by the way. You can also find suspension setups for the 82 and later yt125 and yt175 and I might have one available soon if I can get a couple parts fabbed up! So don't be impatient and mess up a perfectly good trike. You have a good start. And by being patient and doing the right things, it will go along way to help people believe that you are a little more responsible and to help restore you back to a good reputation on this site if that matters. Everyone deserves another chance. And most people don't really relish the idea of having to chastise other board members. I hope for your sake and ours you can become an asset to the boards here like most everybody else. If you are willing to listen and take advice, I would be glad to be of help if I can. Others will be willing to help once they see you have calmed down some. I would really like to see you build a trike and be able to enjoy it and not be the negative entertainment on here, welcome back and good luck with your new project.

3x3 is 1980. Hope this helps. The main parts that will fit your trike are l980 and l981. A yt175 front end is a bolt on. Also, none of the 82 and later rear bearing carrier stuff will work with your trike but the rear bearings are the same for all years.

thanks digger! hay guys is it a good idea?? i have 2 tires that have cracks threw the tires causing air leaks duh. anyways i was thinking the cheaper way wouldnt it be fine if i just got 2 tire tubes for my 22x11-8's. 30 bucks shipped for 2.
YTM200BOY
05-26-2008, 11:58 AM
does anybody know if its a pain in the arse to put tubes in?
Vealmonkey
05-26-2008, 01:13 PM
Tubes are easy if you can break the beads of the tires off the rims, that's the hardest part.
YTM200BOY
05-26-2008, 10:46 PM
haha i agree i got the rear tire ready for the tube but my front tire is a pain in the arse cuz it wont brake the bead any idea how to do so?? sludgehammer? haha
Vealmonkey
05-27-2008, 11:23 AM
Only if you know someone with a bead breaker. I've done a couple of ugly things to break the beads on tires, but I wouldn't recommend them to anybody else. I need to buy a nice and inexpensive bead breaker myself.
