I run 80w Golden Spectro.

I am trying ATF type F right now.

Both work.

i use amsoil 10-40 motorcycle oil in my 86

the service manual says 10-40. but my friend that works at a kaw shop says the 85. i just think the 85w makes my tranny noisy, so i guess i'll try 10-40. also i'm interested how the atf type f works

I use Castrol MTX synthetic 80w85 in mine and it works great. Actually most everything I've put in it has worked at least okay. Type F atf is a good alternative to dedicated trans fluid, just change it often. Be sure to get the Type F fluid!

Enjoy your ride.

thanks chris. i cant wait to get this thing in the sand and on the open trails. it had a built motor on it when i got it and it was scary fast, the piston was a little scuffed up so i pulled it to be freshened up. now i have a stocker on it for the time being, not quite as fast but fun. the trans noise is buggin me though, and i don't remember the built ported motor whining through the gears. i guess i really don't care if i hurt this motor/trans. it was a sleeved rebuilt ebay motor i scored for a 100 bucks.

Atf has always worked for me... I have have used both Type F and mercon/dextron with no issues.... I change it after every serious ride... shifting is great and the clutch action is flawless...

The type F seems fine to me but is very thin and I would not run it for an entire season like I would an 80w/85w.

I am using the type F to flush my trans because it is cheap and I had water in it due to a bad water pump seal.

i kept the 80 in. i think i have a bad bearing in my trans. the bike ran great this whole weekend, just sounded supercharged. got to wax on a few 2 wheelers...

It may just be varnish on the bearings. You may try a little carb cleaner in the trans for several short term changes.

right on thanks. my buddy cracked my frame when he jumped it 35 feet in the sand. so it will need to get welded and gusseted.
