Hi guys, I need advice and opinions on an engine that I bought. It appears to have been built well, but it has 220lbs. of compression. So I'm assuming it has a shaved head. Is it safe to run, if I use race gas? Or should I do something to lower the compression? It does have the "Hot Rods" connecting rod in it also.

just to be safe,, I would run Race gas in that or mix race gas with 98 oct at 50/50(50% race gas-50% 98 oct) should be fine..dont mix it with anything less than 98 tho..and then you can probley ween it off the race gas as the compression drops over time

Should I run a hotter plug also? And, can I get away with using octane boost if race gas isn't available?
Octane boost is a joke. There is some stuff called Octane Supreme 130, it has real lead in it and you mix in different parts to get a 2-16 REAL point boost on your fuel. Usually with a higher performance engine you want to run a colder plug.

I'm not to sure how booster mixes with premix oils (check it out call manufacture). You can get VP fuels via UPS worldwide shipped to your door.

you can also get Klotz fuel shipped too your door also..

Wow that Klotz fuel is extremely expensive. 5 gal for $64.00? that's over $12.00/gallon.
You should be able to pick up 100LL at a local airport (small airports) for $4.50 to $5.50 gallon.
100LL is rated at 100 to 130 octane depending on the lean/rich conditions the fuel is used in.
edit: I'll say, however, that purpose blended racing fuels like VP and Klotz stuff is probably better if you are racing. However, for recreational use I don't think the cost difference is worth the 1-3% hp improvement.
