I have a project 350x that has been sitting in my barn for the past 5+ years. I am told it needs a new clutch. I took off air filter, washed her, took off front sprocket cover. This is where I found that there was a hole right to the right of the front sprocket? I believe that at one time the chain broke and put a hole in the transmission case. So maybe it doesn't need plates and all. I will be in the next few days taking off the tranny case and looking at the clutch etc. The whole is about half and inch by half an inch. Will I be able to weld it? jb weld it? What are my options?

also some of the breakage is on the main engine? so I'm not sure If i should continue to fix her, or just give up? Its in rough condition, but the engine must be in good running shape because the carb was beautifully clean, the tank has no rust, and the spark plug was in great condition (the same one in there for ever).

I would say try to jb weld it if you're looking for a cheap runner or just buy another outter case and have the inner one touched up professionally. Most of the 350's i've seen that we run hard and not serviced as often as they should have been have some kind of chain damage on the case...

Its hard to tell from the picture, but usually on a 350x if the chain hits below the sprocket oil will come out, if it hits above it there is an air pocket there that shouldn't hurt as long as there isn't a hole all the way through the next layer of aluminum. I have 2 or 3 350x's with jb welded cases. It appears that the chain hit lower, oil came out so they JB welded them. I doubt they put a seam in, so now the cases are fused together in that one area. More of a band-aid than a true repair.

Fill it up with oil, see if any comes out, if not I'd ride it. Also make sure the shifter moves freely, the shifing mechanism is just inside the cases in that area and if the aluminum gets pushed in far enough it could bind the shifting parts, but I doubt thats the case. Keep an eye for any leeks and check oil level every time you ride, if a 350 is run low on oil its guarantee head/cam/cyclinder damage which is big $$$$ to fix.

To see if the clutch is bad its best to have it running. Drive it around and after you shift get on the throttle hard and see if you hear the engine revving up, but the wheeler won't pick up speed.

Yeah she's just gonna be a runner if she gets going. Not a mint restore, but I'm gonna savor it none the less. when I take the case off is there anything I should be weary about? and how can I tell if the clutch needs to be replace? plates and all. can I tell by looking at them?

I don't think it was ever welded. The shiny metal your seeing is where the chain did more damage I think, but that part it didn't break through. If you look to the direct left of the sprocket you can see a hole. that's my issue

its best to have a manual, you have to set the auto decompressor mechanism correctly, and it seems to me there are o rings that might get lost. The nut on the end of the crank is left hand threads, can't remember if that needs to come off to do a clutch or not.

I think you'll find you got lucky and it hit the air pocket I mentioned, its probably fine to drive, but thats up to you to watch for oil leeking.

if it hold's oil ride the crap out of it. also check the splines on the shaft and sprocket, they are known to strip during a high rpm chain jump.

the hole is a empty room that a lot of 350x motors have busted out....like it was said, if it dont leak dont worry about it
