whats up everyone. i just picked up a YTM 225dx for $250. the guy thought it couldnt stay running cuz of issues. well we got it back to the house. cleaned the carb and noticed that the fule lines were backwards. put carb back on and fixed fuel lines. thing started right up and runs great. Loads of compression, no smoke and very smooth.

its an 84 by the way.

well i have searched and cant find some answers.

first off i need new tires. right now it has 22 11 8's all the way around. i dont know what a good setup on a trike is supposed to be. but i do know that these tires on the rear are way to tall and rounded and balloon like.

so what is a good setup for a tire that is more flat and aggressive. right now i cant even make a turn with these tires. just wants to roll on me. have to go crazy slow.

i also dont know how tire sizes read. I do know on cars but doesnt seem like that would be how on these. so someone please just explain the numbers to me really quick.

I would like to loose about 2" on the height of the tire and get something really flat like quads run.

ill let this be my first question cuz i want to fix this asap. thanks alot guys

22x11-8

22= tire height
11= tire width
8= rim diameter

Also, tires like the holeshots have a flatter profile to them, but I'm sure there are many others to choose from. For the front tire on my YTM 200 I have the Kenda Front max and love it, huge improvement over the old knobbies

Here's a pic of the front max tire it's a 22x11-8 and I have Kenda Dirt Dawgs on the back, also 22x11-8

Are you relatively new to three wheelers? The whole wanting to tip while you turn thing is something to get used too, lean into the turns. After riding awhile you'll get the hang of it. Oh yeah, welcome to the board!

Yea, im kind of new to the 3 wheelin thing. ive rode them before. but i grew up on dirt bikes. so i know how to ride but its just a different feel. the tires i have dont have a good contact patch. looks like how a street bike tire is. i know you dont want the front tire flat but with the rears flatter it will give better traction right?

your tires look way flatter than mine. i guess it has to do with the brand/style of tire.

so how would it be if i went with a 20x10x8 tires in the rear. and a 22x11x8 in front? anyone running something like this.

we do alot of desert riding. really no trail type riding out in vegas.

also this trike is not going to be used as my normal riding bike. I got it to really just mess around with when we go out. I have my yz250 and my yz450f when we get serious. lol.

also does anyone know if i can change out the front forks with like the tri z trike? mine are pretty much done but i read that the tri z ones are better anyway. more travel.

If it were me, I'd go with the 22x11-8 on the rear too just for ground clearance. But 20x10-8 would work too, just would have less top end speed because of the smaller tire and it would look a little funny with the bigger tire up front. But it should work no problem. What kind of tire is on there now? Ever check out Dennis Kirk?

You can browse through there and get an idea of what you like. My tires have a little bit of a rounded profile to them, but not too bad, probably in between the rounded and flat profile tires. But they are really good in the snow :)

And I don't know if the Tri-Z forks will actually swap or not...

the tires i have on it now are 22x11x8's all the way around. but you know how the front tires are more round than the rears. well all my tires look like front tires. this thing cant turn good at all. even when leaning my whole body over.

also, i dont really care for top speed cuz i dont plan on racing this thing or anything. and everywhere we ride its hard to get into 4th gear anyway. except one spot where everyone can open up and hold at full speed for a good minute. but i think this trike will blow up if i do that. haha.

so yea, with the smaller tire, i think it will give me a better jump off the line and would probably climb hills better.

so if i run a 20 on the rear so i do a 21 on the front. and should i go more narrow on the front?

I really dont know a good setup to go with for the riding i do. its dirt, rocks. lots of hills. doesnt have too many straight aways. NO trail riding.

i wish i can extend the wheels wider out with a slight swing arm extension but i dont think thats possible with this trike.

you can probably get spacers for the rear wheels, not sure what tires you shoud go with. Thought some of the 225 guys would be jumping in on this...

we should start a thread of tires.

post pics of your ride from different angles and say what tires you are running and size.

but yea, so far i found alot of the 20x10x8 tires and thinking about going with the turf tamers or something like that. they any good?

haven't used them myself but as far as I know they are pretty good all around tires

part of your problem could be you may have too much pressure in the tires. depending on the tire, around 3-4 lbs should be good.

If you want to go wider in the rear, 3 bolt wheel spacers would be tough to find but you could find some honda 300ex, 400ex hubs and upgrade to 4 bolt rims. Just the different hubs will give you another couple of inches of width or something like that, and then you could get spacers or offset rims also.

I also forgot to mention, if you put your stock 3 lug rims on backwards you will gain an inch of width in the back. Its not much but its free and would only take a few minutes. When they are on backwards, the valve stems will then be on the inside (which is no big deal).

If it where me, I would try to go with 22" tires for ground clearance with rocks. Turf tamers are great tires, but they are 2 ply if I remember correct and you would have to be careful if your around alot of sharp rocks.

If you're climbing hills and such, I'd stay with the 22x11x8's man. DX's are short and rather light on the nose anyway, squatting the rear is just going to make it even lighter. I run (22x11x8) Kenda Klaws on the rear of my DX and love em! They are nice and flat but I still have clearance. On the front I just have a cheaper knobby. And on those hills, put your right knee in the seat and foot in the grab bar for the steep ones... you'll have more control over the front end!!

That's a great trike man, you'll enjoy it!

And like Hondahaulic said, turn those rear wheels around and you'll gain alot of stability... valve stems to the inside.

aight cool. is there any other tire that is a good all around tire like the turf tamers. that would be 4ply. cuz it is pretty rocky in one part we ride. but thats not where we go alot.

the other place we ride is alot nicer. so i want a tire that is good in all areas and would work good in sand. Nothing with crazy knobbies.

and switchin around the rims sounds sweet.

also, where can i get the hubs to change it to a 4 lug setup?? i cant seem to find places

Kenda Klaws would be a good choice, I plan on getting a set for my Tri-Z sometime. Here's a pic, and they are six ply so that would be good for rocks
