Ok so it looks like i'm going to be looking for a 200 to rob the motor for an auto X project, of course i will be buying one that dirt cheap and looks like it went through a war. What do i want? I have no use for a starter, so if there a rigid 200 with just kick (i dont think any are kick) or pull start. Anything i should look for outside of it running, as far as specific years, codes (E, S, or ES)? It's gonna be in an 83/4 frame and will basically be a rider for my friends/putting around the yard machine, thanks in advance, TC...

- 84 Honda Big red 200ES are shaft driven, the engine is no use for you.
- 82-83 Honda Big red 200E have got a electric starter and a high low sub-tranny. From what i've read if you make a dent on the frame's downtube the engine will bolt into a 200x, but as you stated, you have no use for a electric starter.
- 84-85 Honda 200M is a 200s engine with the electric starter
- Honda 200s, 83 200 and 185 and 185s engine only have a pull starter and are 99% bolt-on into a 200x frame.
If i'm wrong please someone correct me.

Good to know, thanks again because i dont want to modify the machine at all so it can become a clean 200X someday. Sounds like i'll be looking into the S then, any chance if i found an E cheap i could just stick a billit block off on the starter plate and not have to hammer on anything? I was thinking the starter is on the front of the motors but i really dont have a clue, TC...

81-83 ATC200 motors, All ATC200S motors, and the 185/S will fit into a 200X frame.

I have a 200 motor and trike but your too far away from me.
i sugest a pull-start would be best on your auto-x

So i guess i'm back to the 200S then. Now all i gotta do is find one that looks like it was in a war. Thanks for all the help, are there any differences or issues with the 200S i should be aware of? Like i said i want one dirt cheap thats beat up so i'd like to know what motor issues there may be...

200s is the way to go. 85 and 86 motors are 5 up shift pattern, 84's are 5 down shift pattern
I have a 200s motor thats still original bore/piston and runs like a champ even though it only has 100 pounds of compression where it should have 140-160ish.
THey can be found cheap, especially if you just want to tear it apart and rebuid it up right.

lol you dont need a "war" engine. ive seen clean ones go for 150.00. yea the 200s is probably your best bet. i used a 185s at first then went to a built 200s motor. cant go wrong with either one.

Haha well a 250.00 or less runner is what i'd prefer, i dont really want to rebuild it or anything just wash/paint it and stuff it in the other frame.
the shifter info is a big help i dont know if i could figure out how to shift up, down. So it looks like 85/6 for me.
Are you guys running the wiring/electronics from the X or the S on your builds? Ok i think i'm done for now...

some prefer the clutchless shifting... its nice if you putt around a lot
id use the bottom end of the 200s and the 200x top cam & head if i was gona build an auto x

I was thinking of a cheap way to make something to putt around and also one i can trust my friends to ride. I have the other X's and the R so this would be a cheap ride (under 500.00 total) I got that PC'd frame and such this weekend, and i have a complete rear end set up minus the hubs already so its pretty much down to plastics and a motor.
I have a 200 motor and trike but your too far away from me.
Well the frame and what not is up in Pa, we're planning on moving back up the in July so it may not be too far. We have some friends over in Columbus i'm sure we'll be visiting at some point. But thats still a couple months away...

That's be great Jason any chance they shift up? Either way maybe when i get down to hershey to pick up the 86 and the frame i'll swing over your way and see what we can work out. I'm really not sure what all the frame will need it looks like it had some wiring, and all of the motor/swinger mounts and bolts so it shouldn't be too tough to get it together. Any chance you have some used but not junk early X fenders? I'll get with you closer to the time. Maybe i'll have this R roller still to offset the cost, TC...

i have some cracked fenders that needs some zip tie repair. all the 200 motors shift down it;s not that bad you get used to it.
i have mountians of old style 200x stuff i'll trade for the 250r roller

Awesome looks like i will just drag that thing north with me. Its all torn down now anyway so its not taking up a lot of space. If you end up with a complete running 200 set it aside as well, i will need one complete carb to pan, and some form of exhaust...

when your doing a auto-x you need a 200x exhaust and intake that bolts to the head. the 200s intake is angled wrong and wont work. 200x exhaust blts rite up no modding
