How much better is the 86-87 compared to other 200X machines? I am going to look at an 87 Saturday. What are readily availible? How about plastics? The set on this machine is ok . How fast is a stock ish 200X with 22" tires? Are there any common issues I should look for other then bearings a bushings etc? Im upgrading from my first trike, a 1983 Big Red 200E. I cant wait for Saturday to come.

An 86/87 200X is a totally different machine compared to the first generation. About all the two trikes share in common is the name. Honda put a completly different engine and 6 speed tranny in the newer 200X. The handling is a heck of alot better on these second generations as well. Of all my trikes, I would sell the 200X last if I was forced to. I ride it over the other three on any day!

If its the one in Fort Kent I'd get there before Saturday. Looks like a solid trike for the price. Just check the basic stuff. Check for slop at the steering/swing arm pivot/rear axle. Check for oil leaks and if it smokes. Pay close attention to the kicker. The shaft is discontinued and the kickers are about 90$ new. Parts for these machines are hard to come by and generally run a little more $$$. But not immpossible to find.

I'd be all over that one if I lived up there. Good luck.

It is the one in Fort Kent. He is holding it for me. The plastics are damaged front and rear, Oh well. Thats a good reason to change color. Ill keep you posted. Thanks for the heads up on the kicker. How hard do they kick? It is a crazy ride for me at over 320 miles round trip.

Holy Chit!!! I just looked on a map where Fort Kent is... My guess is thats the northern most point in the US.

They kick easy. As far as I know the 86-87's didn't have the infamous weak kicker like the 83-85's. As far as parts go, the 1st gen X parts are very plentiful, not as much for the 2nd generation.

Look for cracks and abuse. Check the oil, fire it up and take it for a ride. Make sure it goes through all the gears well and pulls good in each gear. Normal stuff.

You really need only talk about the most important changes from the 85 and under to the 86/87 model.

Easy chain adjust with a carrier.
No splitting cases to fix the kickstarter problems of the 85 and older.
A camshaft that rides in Ball Bearings.
6 Speeds.

Improved handling, suspension, a voltage regulator, easy valve adjustment, an oil drain onto the SIDE of the motor and better looks just ice the cake :)

I saw that one when i was searching over the weekend. I thought it was a pretty good deal for someone that can get it home without too much extra cost. Plus at that price you can afford to put a little more into it before getting concerned of losing a ton on it when it comes time to move on...

I leave to look at it at 7 in the AM.

Where can I get parts for it, Is there a resourse for them?

Will parts from other machines fit, IE grab bars, axles, head lights, etc etc? Im pretty new to this kind of machines, I have only had a trike for less then a year.

I do like the 350X headlight look.

I'm sure you can retrofit plenty of parts, but it seems for the most part the 86/7 200X's are their own machine. So you will pay a little more for parts, but as stated many times on the site they seem to be well worth it...

How do they perform compared to modern 4 strokes? Somethiong like a Warrior or 300-400EX?

I had an 02 warrior, bone stock down to air filter until a few months ago, i loved to ride my 84 200x 10X more than the warrior. Speed wise the warrior was faster than the 5 speed 84, i haven't had a chance to ride my 86 yet, but i'm sure the 6th gear will make all the difference.

If you want 400ex performance i would think a stock 350x may be a better option, but like i said i dont have any seat time on the 86/7 200x's. I'm sure someone that has one of each will let you know...

Actually I was just wondering how a light small bore sport trike stood up against the classic yet newer quads. How was the drag part of the Warrior/X relationship?

I plan to gear for bottom end grunt and leave me top end as low as I can get it so I can cruise with my wife(84 Big Red 200ES) as close as I can. With me if I have more power, I will use it, LOL.

I would think that the closest new quad you could compete against in drag races closely would be like a 250EX or something like that.

I'm 95% sure the 2nd gen 200X would take care of the warrior (running 22" rears) but i'm also partial to 3 wheelers so take that for what it's worth.

I think if geared right the 200 could easily hold its own against a 300ex, but as far as the wife on a 200es, i'd say she's gonna be upset if she can tell what letting her win sounds like...

Yep, I agree with i58829. The 200X should beat the Warrior in a drag race. Would be pretty close agains a 300EX.

I dont need to let her win. Her 4 wheeler is faster then mine and its stock. We have the trikes to put put around town trails with.
