I'm thinking of building a 250r from nothing but random parts on ebay. Would it be worth it? Or would it be better to just buy one?

depends how custom you want it but generally buying one should mean less headaches, time ect... buying 2nd hand parts individually can be a bit hit and miss

Unless you can get a roller it is VERY expensive.

Take the 86 350X I'll build someday -

1000$ - Crate motor and crate shock.
275$ - Frame
150$ - 06 450R swingarm with caliper and linkage
75$ - 450R rear axle with hubs.
150$ - 250R front suspension rebuilt and new OEM boots.

I'm at 1650$ and my other 86X whcih was very nice and complete only cost me 1400$.

you missed something tho.....take that $1400 bike and add the 450r parts and the new motor and shock and the 250r forks

seems to me building it from scratch is the way to go....and its how you want it

I agree. I bet that 450r/350x hybrid is worth the extra $200. $200 Isnt alot anyways, it makes more sence to buy a roller really, get a nice motor, get some other parts all that, or maybe just a frame, then you can really custom it and do some neat stuff on it.

The point I was trying to get across fellas.....

Is that I have no air box, no electrical, no seat, tank, plastic, pegs, bars, throttle, brake parts and on and on and on. If you buy one to build in pieces it will cost you a small fortune. It's better to get a decent R and add the goodies onto it.

but if cash is a problem you would end up with a with a nicer bike how you want it buying it in parts

I guess the best part of it is that I still have a great bike to ride while I'm building the one I want. I'd still take a junk complete roller though to snatch the little parts that add up quick.

Every part I buy for the piece bike I also buy for the daily rider. I was psyched to get a crate motor with kicker and carb and a crate shock for 1000$ shipped last week :w00t:

Shipping is getting really bad now, most guys want 9.99$ to ship just about anything. When diesel hits 7$ a gallon in a couple of years shipping is gonna be insane.....

I use to want to build machines from pieces...but anymore I'd rather take the most clapped out clunker possible, as long as there is SOMETHING there.

umm so far, it's been working out great for me, lol it's slow but It's slowly getting there, and I can do what work I want as i go, and so far I'm well below what a R would cost me whole.

:D

Oh and I shop around for the best prices.

All the big ticket items I find can be gotta for decent deals, but its always those pesky small items, seat latch, motor mounts, swingarm bolts, bolts in general, boots, etc that add up. I am finding this with my 81 R. I supposely bought a wore out trashed machine but it was ALL there. No it wasnt and that stuff is costing me time and money rather quickly. Good luck man, I am sure the crowd here has some of those pesky little parts you could get for cheap.

I find it better to buy the whole machine. Take my 350X I bought last week I bought for $1000 and it was in really good shape. Only thing i have done is traded the IMS tank that was on it for a metal one ($50 to paint) $1050, Maier fenders $1250, and rebuilt the forks and put new graphics on $1350. so $1350 and i have a really nice 350X.

And in January i bought my 85 200X for $200 and it had the kicker slip issue, no exhaust, and shredded plastic. I have about $1000 into it including the price of the bike (I did put a new topend and some other things it didn't really need but it was apart so i did them anyway) so subtract around $300 for that.
