View Full Version : Adding a Tach?

So, I found this digital Tach in the toolbox. It was on one of our quads when we got it, but I didn't see how it was wired.
Thought it would be kind of cool to keep track of how many hours I have on the motor and see what kind of RPM's I'm running at. I doubt it'll be all that accurate though.
Anyone ever added a tach and know where the wire is supposed to go?

Are you sure there's only 1 wire? Is it battery powered? If so, then it probably wraps around your spark plug wire. I have a fully functional digital tach/hour meter if you're interested.

Yup, It just wraps around the plug wire near the cap, should have a button battery inside. All the forestry equipment I service has those on them and thats how they operate.

I got one on my trail bike.its mounted on a stainless bracket,on the bar mount. its a tiny tac. hour meter and Tac..really nice for setting idle speed and maintance..the tac is a little erratic when under throttle tho.

this seems like a really cool idea. Anyway to make a tach from car/motorcycle work on an atc?

Not unless you're good at wiring.

i know some of the snowmobile ones get tied in with the hot wire and ground coming off the stator. not too hard to hook up if you know what sled its off of and have a wiring diagram for that sled.

Thanks for the help guys.
Just wrapped it around the plug wire and fired it up.

It idled at around 3500-3700 and peaked at just under 18k.

that sounds really high???

Probably is. I'm not sure how accurate the tach is and it was only just quick throttle blips because I didn't feel like fully warming it up.
Although, it's a fairly high revving motor being a smaller 2 stroke.
I'm sure those are off by a few thousand though.

Did you put it on a 2 or 4 stroke engine? sounds like its meant for a 4 stroke but you put it on a 2 stroke. That would make it read double the actual RPM.

Just a thought.

Yeah it's on the 200X/175R so it was on a 2 stroke.
I looked online and found one nearly identical that stated it was good for 2 or 4 cycle engines.
Wouldn't be surprised if you were right though, 9k sounds a bit more reasonable.
