I have a friend that is looking to unload his 85 200X. Cosmetically, the trike is really rough, but it did start 2nd kick after months outside in the weather. I took a peek at the inside of the fuel tank, he was smart enough to keep it full, it looks perfect! Can you folks tell me what to check out / common troubles for the 85 X's? Thank you.

Common things that Ive noticed with the 200X's are that the rear end of the frame tends to break, mostly around the grab bar area, and sometimes near the shock mounts. Also check the swingarm bolt and tensioners, they tend to get chewed up. Last, about 99% of the ones Ive seen, the kickstarters slip on, and they have the skidplate mounts broken off the swinger.

One of the thing that I forgot to check before buying my big red was the bearing carrier and the hub spline. It can be costly to replace an axle, carrier, bearing and hub. On mine the rear drum is absent, the bearing carrier is welded and the hubs are welded on the axle. Also check the steering stem bearing.

Best thing about this model is that the parts are plentiful and cheap!
If its a good runner, and the price is right, snatch it up you wont be sorry.

also check for brake operation, when i got mine i had to free up the slider pins in the calipers so they would adjust for new pads and what not, my rear was is still pretty bad. also listen for top end noise, listen for chain slap, i got mine with a extra long bolt pushing on the auto adjuster making lots of slack in the cam chain.

well I went to look at it, with the list of things to look for. When I pulled into the driveway, he says he needs the oil changed in is girlfriend's 400EX and the swingarm bushings installed in his RM 250. I got the 200X for doing the labor on the 2 machines for him :D:D:D:D:D

here it is, rough, rough, rough. I did ride it to the trailer, so it is a runner :w00t:
too dark outside, so here is a garage pics

Wow those are some trashed front bearings, and most likely the hub as well. Oh well the price was right and i bet for another 500.00 you can have a pretty nice machine, or for a hundred or two you could have a beater to ride around on...

It took a 2 pound hammer and a brass drift to get the front axle out with alot pf PB blaster. I need to cut the bearing races out with the dremel...

I pressure washed the tank......the OE white paint came into view rather quickly :D. I also dune cut the rear fenders just so the cracks went away. I'll get new plastic for it in the next few months.

I started on the tank with the sander. I also got a coat of primer on it as well. I'll sand again today and get another coat on it.

after a bit of a break from this 200X, I dug back into this one today. I ended up cutting the swingarm bolt out of it. I am going to drill and tap the swinger now so I can install grease zerks. I will also have the collar machined so grease can get all the way to the bolt, thus no more stuck bolts on this trike and my 84 as well :D:D:D:D

I will be a complete rebuild, not a factory looking restore. My son wants it white with ghost flames. There is alot of bearings to fight before I worry about new plastic.

so, my next question is this. Can you press the swinger bearings completely through the swinger? I tried the "junkyard shop press" this morning with a grade 8 bolt 14" long and the threads just stripped when I got good pressure on them with my 1/2" impact. That makes me think the need pulled out with a blind puller. Any input?

I used a puch (sharp point) and pounded it down to fold the bearings in on them selves and then cleaned up with a dremel wire wheel and placed new bearing in
5 minutes each side

Danold

No, the swing arm bearings will not press through. To get mine out I pressed them in with a socket to break the rust and bent them all out of shape and just pulled them out. If you have bearing races pushed all the way till they stop, then doubt a blind puller will get out but its worth a try before you start tearin them up to get them out. Good luck.
