How can I tell what year my Yam, Tri Moto is?

Hello, I recently picked up a nice Yamaha 125 Tri-Moto. They guy thought it was a 1980, but does anyone know for sure how I can tell? I read somewhere that it's like the 10th digit of the vin. My vin is only nine digits.:wondering Thanks, Jack
