stator problem 250r

Have a 1985 250r and the old factory statory went bad. i went out and bought a new stator / key and wont seem to fire... the stator is a aftermarket moose racing stator and i have a feeling that its the stator and not the bike. I took a friends stock 250r stator out and put in my bike and it fires up within very few kicks... Does anyone have a moose racing stator on their 250r that actually works?
