will taking of the airbox lid lean out my carb or make it richer

With the minimal mods listed in my signature and stock jetting I removed the air box lid and mine flat fell on its face. It actually ran worse with the lid off because it had no fuel.

the reason im asking is my plug is black so i figured if i took the lid off that would help

You can try adjusting the pilot screw on the carb and/or raising the clip on your needle jet.

Raising the needle would richen it more.



I believe oil burning causes a white ash type buildup on the plug. If its burning oil you'll see blue smoke out the exhaust too. Black smoke means its rich.

Hmmm yea guess so. I was picturing the needle and raising it up would be the wrong way. Raise the clip or lower the needle, I guess it doesn't matter as long as you lean it out.
