Just how much do people spend on the 83-85 200X? Ive got it running, brakes are bought, just waiting for them to show up. got a headlight and a nicer tank. Im looking at a air filter, front and rear fenders. Misc. bolts. replace the nipple on the rear master cylinder, then recover the seat. Then try and find a muffler. If I buy new fenders, (front and rear) I'll be into this trike for about $550 and it'll be pretty nice and complete trike. I see them on craigslist going for 500-900 bucks. So what do folks consider reasonable, before getting too upside down in one? jim

I don't think many of us are motivated by that. When I have one I want to keep I don't really pay much attention to how much money I'm putting into it (hard to put a dollar value on the fun of rebuilding/riding them for me). If your primary concern is not losing money when you sell it I guess I wouldn't put more than $700 max into it though. That seems to be the typical price for one in AZ. Maybe a little more if it's super nice. I got $1100 for a real clean '85 I sold on ebay a couple years ago but on CL I don't think I would have gotten that much. Probably would have been more like $900.

well let's see...200 for the bike 450 for the lifan, new fenders 200...new exhaust 130. 75 for a new oem carb....60 bucks for brakes and lights. 100 for a battery and the wiring harness. new tires 100 bucks, new grips 14, new kill switch cause mine was broke 30 bucks. nos black seat for 36 bucks....and 20 bucks for stickers. oh yeah, and having the tank redone by syko for 75.

not to mention I rebuilt the first engine before I started doing anything more. 30 bucks for one gasket kit...75 for oem gaskets when the others didn't fit. also new piston and boring 120...new valves 60 bucks.

if I had to do it again...I wouldn't, I'd be a liquid R for the same price. lol.

I have around 700 into mine and growing. Im not worried about resale value since I cant see myself selling it anytime soon. I probably wouldnt do it again, but its not like I dumped 700 into it in one day. A bunch of little things add up, 50 bucks here and there.

I just seem to get sidetracked to easily. I started out wanting to do up a 70 for a keeper. Then a guy came by and offered to buy both of the 70's I had, basically broke even on the two. I had a guy call me on my 185S wanting it for the motor for his dead 200X. I ended up buying the X myself. Got it fired off and started collecting parts, mainly because I cant stand having anything broken.
Heck Ive even got a rolling ATC70. it needs a handle bar mount, plastics, tank , seat and tires. Im even thinking of collecting parts to put it back together. jim

I've got about 300-350 in mine total. 150 for the trike and 150 in the engine rebuild. Not bad considering its in relatively good shape. It needs the clutch redone, I'm going to do a 6 speed gear swap (free since I already have the XR engine), cam and carb swap (again free since I have the parts laying around) and at some point new fenders which will cost around 300. I expect to have around 1000 in it total but thats with it built up how I want it and it should be a solid running machine. In the right area a good looking stock 200x will bring around 1000 or so.

pretty much what the other guys said... i've had my 86 for about 3 years now, cant see myself ever selling it... into it for maybe 900 or so, including purchase price with a top end freshening, chain and sprockets, shock rebuild, etc, etc (including those stupid red tires that i still can't believe i bought, lol.... those are gone as soon as the piggy bank fills up again. ) the way i see it.... every day they are getting harder to find.... so in the long run its money well spent. :beer

When it comes to 3 wheelers, the money I put into it does not weigh on my mind(even though Im broke:rolleyes: ). Its the fact that you'll have countless hours of fun on it. At the end of the day when you jump off of it, you wont think of how much money you put in it but how much fun you had. When its all said and done you wont care about money, just remember

nicely stated, I calculated it all up and I have around 1500 including 200 which I bought it for. Even though I went through 3 throttles, 3 carbs, 2 swingarms, 2 shocks, 2 front ends, numerous clutch levers, 2 axle, 4 sprockets, and lots of bearings, it was all worth it. It is super reliable and gets me anywhere I want to go anytime with no hesitation. Next thing will be a full top end overhaul!

When it comes to these things I get sidetracked as well. Ive been buying and selling trikes and bikes making a bit on the side. Im going to have to start dealing with stuff I dont like though, as I purchased a Max 6x6 the other day only to sell.. and just dont think its going to work out that way.
If your x is something you plan to keep for a while, I wouldnt hesitate to put a little money into it. But if it is something you think you may lose interest in, I would send it down the road before you get too much invested, the 83-85's dont bring much in any kind of condition.

i put over $2700 into my 200x when i was building the auto-x...but keep in mine i started with a brare 200x frame and i bought the parts i wanted....not what it came with.

now i am redoing it again since i sold $1,200 worth of it off. if its somthing you want to keep and dont mind putting money in every now and then do it...if not move them out fast.

The 85's and under just don't have good resale. They are mainly an under a grand trike regardless of performance parts.

We have 2500$ into my buds 85 and he'll be lucky to get about half and I doubt he will. People want cosmetic perfection at the >1000$ mark but don't realize just a bit of motor work is easily 600$ and upwards....

 I thought I had alot into mine, but its not nearly as nice as yours. I just fix whatever needs to be fixed, and ride.

I hate to say it, I just broke the 300 dollar mark on this one. Im at about the same on my 185S. and Im right at the 300 dollars, but thats for two 87 200X's. I decided on the 84. when the front brakes get here. Im going to see how it shifts. IF the tranny is fine, then im going to go for new plastics, and call it good. I just ordered the connector for the rear master at honda. So Im definetly working on it. jim

well again i will agree with other members.

"its not how much money you have into it, its how much fun and rideable/rebuilding/witched times you get on your 3 wheeler)

and not many people i meet even know what 3 wheelers are, my bosses 6 year old kid tried to correct me when i told them i went riding my 3 wheeler, he said dont you mean a 4 wheeler? whats a 3 wheeler? lol

so my 200x was 200, 80 for new tank, 100 in front and rear bearings, 30 for front and rear brakes, kicker gears, gasket kit, i have a cylinder, head and timing stuff coming up for 50. and soon to be new rims and tires. so thats like 500ish. my garage has my other 92 XR280L with 2600 just into the motor! but i dont look back. its a very good investment.

yeah man have fun with it!i have an easy 2500-3000 in my 84 R. it neded very little mechanically when i bought it, but as one thing led to another, top and bottom end rebuild became a bigbore kit, became 2 carbs, as the first one didnt work out, became a vforce, ported, balanced crank.....not to mention all the little things her and there and everywhere.........im getting theft insurance on it for 3,000 soon.

and in the end, resale on it wouldnt touch that. not even close. but man, i can take the thing apart and put it back together with my eyes closed, and now i have a solid runner that is wicked fast, and looks sharp too. i would do it all over again.

if u think u got it bad forkin out for parts, u should try finding them in australia... u cant get any new parts at all, unless u pay through the nose to export from the us, and most the trikes left hear r junkers, with that in mind i dont spend a lot of cash on my trike, i got some new rims from a buggy shop, and thats about all ive spent in maby 12 months... if i could get the parts id like to completly rebuild both my trikes.. so next time your worried about the price spare a thought for all us out in rural australia...

In the restoration of my 85 BR money was not a real issue. I bought my BR form a very good friend of mine 10 years ago. Cost me a $1000.00 Over the past 10 years I used it alot and in the process most of the plastic got damaged. Then one day about 4 years ago my best friend died, he was only 65. I restored (his) my big red in memory of him. Then only place I hesitated to spend the money on was a trunk lid. I could have gotten an NOS but the person wanted $300.00 All metal parts were powdercoated and all other plastic was NOS. I never kept track of the money, but guess I spent close to another $1500.00 on it. It may sound crazy but it only gets out on nice sunny days. Fixing up a SX riding.

See if this pic loads.
I agree about redoing these things for the hobby. Its just that I have other hobbies that keeps me broke. Mainly my 2 elcaminos, chevelle and camaro. The 71 elcamino we're trying to build it to take to the brackets once in awhile. Its streetable, but I cant convince my wife to let me insure another car. (6 insured now) So the 71 will be getting trailered to the track. The chevelle is a restoration in progress, I just redid the bucket seats. I have a headliner kit I still need to install. Then pull the turbo 400 and bolt up the M20 muncie to the 454. Jim
