View Full Version : 10" front rim idea.....will this work??

I had a pretty good brainstorm, and I'm thinking someone here may have had the same one at one time or another, but here goes........
Most front rims for quads are 10x5, with a 3/2 offset.
In order to be centered, it would have to be 2.5/2.5, so off by a half inch.
I am considering putting it on the opposite side of the wheel hub on my 86 R.
The wheel hub measures just under a half inch, and when you add in the rim thickness, it's darn near perfect, by my math, within 1/16".
Obviously it will have to be set-up for a 4/170 pattern, as well.
Question is.....will this work, or has someone tried it already?
I'm also wondering if it will possibly cause issues with steering.
I have a rim coming, and I plan on trying this theory out.
Any thoughts on this one?

well, the math works out quite well.

i doubt a sixteenth of an inch would affect steering, but you could always use washers to make it perfect.

sounds like after you figure it out, it would make a great HOW-TO-GUIDE!

The only thing I'm wondering about is the 3/2 offset, and being on the opposite side of the hub.
I don't know if it would affect the steering center at all, ya know?
As far as doing it, it won't be anything at all to do, once I get the rim.
I have a spare hub that I plan on flipping the studs on, and if need be, mill the rib a little farther down, so the rim fits nice.
It's nice and flat on side 2, but the rib may need to be ground or milled a bit.
We shall see how this works out. A possible plus might be a touch more caliper clearance, but that remains to be seen:D

I rode a buddys drag R that has a banshee front wheel with a custom hub. The thing was DANGEROUS to ride. I won't say for sure that It was the wheel offset, but what else could It have been. The front end wobbled like mad. This thing was setup goofie In every aspect to me. They took the rear brake pedal off and had hand brakes on the right side with a twist throttle. I went screamin Into a slight turn In my yard with the throttle hung half open because I grabbed the brake lever. Luckily I grabbed the clutch just In time before the thing slammed me to the ground.

This bike has a +12 swingarm also, so that could have added to the problem.
