Dammit!

Before I tear into this thing, can someone that's actually done it give me a quick run down on the correct procedure for replacing the seal and bearing for the clutch actuator shaft (the piece that the cable hooks onto on the stator side of the motor) on a 86 R? If it's in the manual, I don't see it. It looks like it should all pop right out the top there pretty easily. Just want to be sure I'm right and that I'm not going to need a special tool or something to get them out.

I'm 99% sure now that's where the water is getting into my bottom end. Probably at least partly responsible for my stiff clutch too.

I haven't ordered the parts yet. Hopefully they're all available.

I just replaced the seal but not the bearing on the clutch actuator shaft. I had the engine completely apart, so it was easy. I believe you'll need to at least pull the clutch cover, and remove the 5 clutch spring bolts on the pressure plate to remove the clutch pressure, so you can remove the clutch actuator. From there, a screwdriver will easily remove the seal. The needle bearing however, is pressed down inside about 1/2". It looks like the only way to remove it is from the top with a "blind bearing puller", which I had, but it was no where near small enough. The inside diameter of the needle bearing is only about 1/4". Unless your bearing is all crusted up from water/corrosion, I doubt it is worn out. I'd just replace the seal & call it a day. Good luck.

Is there a fifteen dollar harbor freight alternative that will get the job done?
