rear shock question

On my 86 tecate, I am trying to find a replacement for the rear shock. I have found one but it is approximately 1" shorter eye to eye. Will this simply lower the rear end or will this cause other problems?

i was told by another member that a 300 EX shock works. why do you want to replace it?
