I'm using Honda HP 80/85W transmission oil in my 86 R, the stuff designed for 2-stroke tranny's. I'm just wondering how often I should change it.
Also, I've heard conflicting views as to what coolant to use. Any thoughts on that?
Right now I'm using the yellow extended stuff, though I've heard it may not be good in our engines?

I guess you'll get allot of opinion here and little definative facts. So with that in mind, my opinions are:
I use Castrol MTX Synthetic transmission oil for two-stroke transmissions, love it, and change it after about every 5 hours on my racer and 15-20 on my less abused trikes.
As far as coolant, seems like I get to that about once a year and use the Prestone green 50/50 premixed stuff.

i use the same honda red bottle stuff you are using. good stuff.
havent ran mine enough to determine change intervals though.
as for coolant, we use that new prestone stuff that is for all cooling systems.

Honda recommends changing your engine oil every 30 operating days or every 3 months, whichever comes first, and more frequently when riding in dusty areas, sand, or snow. Also service more frequently after riding in very wet or muddy conditions. The R takes less than a quart of oil, so it wouldn't hurt to change it however often you want.
They recommend changing your radiator coolant every two years.
I tried engine ice once, and it seemed that my engine would cool down much quicker than it previously did, but the temp rating for Engine Ice isn't very high and it boiled over on me one trip. After that I reverted back to Prestone (the green stuff). Prestone is good stuff, and its safe to use in aluminum engines too. Thats what I would recommend.

I am very hard on the clutch so I change the trans very often... every ride with atf... or every other when using regular trans oil... the coolant I change everytime I have the engine apart... which between maintenance and upgrades is never very long.. I use regular antifreeze and I only use enough to give some corrosion protection.. water cools better

just use some regular 10-30 or 10-40 in the gear case, but change it fairly often, every couple long rides. Been working fine in mine for the past almost 20 years.
Use some plain old green antifreeze at 50/50 and make sure you use distilled water. cant beat the good ole prestone.
save your cash on this stuff and buy items that count, like good quality gas and 2 stroke oil. Watch out for all that ethanol crap they got floating around here.

whatever coolant you buy make sure there is no phosphorus because it eats up aluminium. also the orange coolant will tend to cake up after a while. thats what it did in the late 90s gms.

Gotcha.......thanks.
I knew there was something bad about that stuff.
I think I'll drain, and flush, then refill with the green.
