So I get to talking to this guy, he's got a 85 200X. Seems when he was driving it around, the drain plug fell off. Didnt realize it until it was too late. I was told it was still running, but seems like metal shavings are dripping out of the oil drain. So is the motor trash? Im just trying to figure out if its worth picking up. I have a 185S I could make a autoX out of it. But if experienced folks here may have seen this before and could shed some light on what fails first. I may see if I can save the motor. Thanks jim

The wrist pin and con rod are usually the first to go.

If it still turns over, is the motor worth fixing? or is it cheaper to just buy another one? Thats if I do the work myself, except any machineing. jim

on my 85 200x back in the day the oil pump went bad and it would run for a little then make a squeek and seize up.

turns out the cam was seizing and makeing the sound

With the lack of oil the cam journals are the 1st too go.The cam will actualy weld itself to the head and then it's scrap aluminum.

Pretty much, I agree with all of these guys. I have a 1986 200x here that was run low on oil and it took the rod bearings, the piston is scored really bad on the one side, and wiped the one lobe off of the cam. You really won't know for sure what all happened until you open it up.

Cam and rockers go first on the 83-85 200X. The cam will sieze to the cam bushing and that will spin in the head making everything junk. If the price is right and you can find a head and cam cheap its not that bad of a project.

Cam and head journals go real quick on low oil, let alone no oil. You can't count on one moving part in there if it was run without oil.

topend from cam then to rings

well I ended up picking it up. the motor seems to turn over fine, I think its low on compression it needs the needle in the carb, rear resivoir, front brakes, plastics. its got ITP rims and holeshots ended up getting it for 150. maybe a little high, but its a roller and I have a 185s I can swap the motor over to get a suspended trike. jim

if the bottom end is likely to be ok, i would think about just putting the 185 top end on the 200x bottom. It would be a little snappier not having to turn the big centrifugal clutch and i have always prefered a manual clutch over auto.

I was thinking cams and lifters as well. The cam is probably junk, probably the lifters and MAYBE the head area where the cam rides.

Well I kind of feel almost guilty. Turns out the drain plug he was talking about was the FILL plug. And it didnt run for crap because it didnt have much compression. I went and adjusted the valves because they were waaay too tight. put a old plug in it and she fired right up! the carb has the slide but no needle. I think im going to pull the carb off the 185 along with the throttle and see how it runs. Jim

Fill plug LMAO

I remember I went riding in the middle of winter with one of my friends, and his fill plug on his Foreman wasn't all the way tightened... I was behind him and I saw a plume of black oil all of a sudden...

Well I pulled the carb off the 185, it runs great, I bought a carb from saladboy so I can keep the 185 complete. I won a headlight off ebay. Im hoping I win a front brake setup. that way I can at least stop the thing. jim

good deal!

the oil plug fell out of my cousin's kx80. we stopped riding about a quarter mile after it started making noise.

we tore it all apart only to find that if we would have put a oil plug in it and filled it back up it would have been perfectly fine.

couple of pics of the new trike, I did get a tank thats missing one scoop. Ive also got the seat, but missing the metal hook in the front.
I bought a carb and throttle from saladboy. Won a headlight off ebay. bid on some brake parts, hopefully I'll be able to see how it runs in a couple weeks. The 22 inch tires are going on to the 185S and the 20s will be going on the X Jim
