Going to look at an 85 350X in near mint condition. All it needs is a new seat cover and it would be flawless. Could get it for under $1500. Problem is that it will not kick start, only push starts. The guy said something about the stator. I am not too bullish on four strokes as they are harder to work on and dont want to buy a POS that i cant find the problem. Is this an easy troubleshoot or a big headache to find the problem. Thanks, bronzeback5

It has probably got low compression but it could be a weak spark...could actually even be as simple as a clogged pilot jet. You will have to judge iit by its overall condition and guess as to which condition is more likely.

sounds like a compresssion problem.

it could be a weak stator, valve adjustment, clogged slow jet, or poor compression. All aren't to hard to fix and not that costly. Heck you can rebuild the topend for around $100
thats to much for any machine if you have to push start it. I would look for something in better shape

If it starts and then runs perfect with no smoke and sounds silent, I'd say there is a carburetor problem.
That symptom is usually poor compression and with the 350X, most likely the head is cooked.

Thanks for all replys. Passed on the 350X. Guy told me everything on phone for half hour about how he has been restoring it and all the goodies but forgot to mention you had to push start it. Didnt find out till i looked at it and i dont need another machine to work on. Stripping down and cleaning the ATC 250R i just bout 2 weeks ago is enough of a project. Wife wants something to ride with me, thats why i was looking at it. New game plan, looking at an 88 TRX 250R Sat. Good compromise, she will get to ride it when im on my trike and i will race it, win win situation. Mine and hers. Let her ride my ATC 250R Sun and she rolled and bailed on a tight sandy berm. Four wheels will suit her better. Thanks again

The decompression cable may be out of adjustment?

...Could also be as simple as someone doesnt have enough @ss to kick it over? Ive heard this problem with many X owners.

Was easy to kick. Said motor was redone not long ago but i figured a fourstroke should be a hard kick.

Sounds like theyre lying about the engine being gone through.
Just a side note, where about in indiana are you?
