I finally got my Tecate running again, she's been down since the day before Thanksgiving. I replaced the stator, flywheel and coil. I think I have the timing a shade too advanced, there is a small amount of kickback you can feel, but she starts and runs. May be even faster with a bit of timing advance like it is. Anyway, I finally put on the 4/110 hubs I bought from BMG a while back and mounted a set of 18" Turf Tamers on 8" wheels. Now I have the badass setup I've been shooting for. I took it out riding Sunday and wow I'm now geared way too low for the 18s. I'm geared 14/38 and used to run 20s and loved the gearing I had.

Options are few so far away from stock gearing, I did find a 34 rear sprocket on ebay and I've seen 15 tooth front sprockets several places. Anybody geared this high? Can a 15 front fit under the factory sprocket cover? How do I calculate final drive ratio including tire diameter so I can shoot for the same ratio as before. 14/38 w/20s was pretty good, I liked it, is 14/34 with 18s about the same or is 15/38 w/18s closer? There's got to be a formula for this.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten how stupid fast my Tecate is. I've been riding my stock Quadracer allot these last three months while the Tecate was down. I was riding woods trails and some broken open ground and couldn't stay in the throttle more than a couple seconds at a time. Between geared too low and the tight conditions, she was a handfull indeed.

Tecate's forever:w00t:

Chris, I would stay away from the 15t front. It's way too close to the case for comfort. I would say 14/34 with 18's. Thats what I got on my bike with 18's. The 15 is not an option as far as I can see. I got one I could send you if you want to try it but like I said it's like way big.

Yeah, I thought I remembered you saying that about the 15t front. No thanks, I'll let you keep it.

Glad to hear you're running 14/34 w/18s. It seems an awefull long way from the stock gearing, but if it works for you I'll try it. Is it on your "Too Hottie" or stock trike?

Sorry Chris, I'm running 14/38, I told you wrong. If your going to run a 34 rear I would reccommend a 13 in front. Sorry about that.

Sorry Chris, I'm running 14/38,

You're running that with 18s?

I rode mine yesterday geared just like that and all day I was wanting a higher gear. I took a long, fast pull through the gears on a dirt road and couldn't believe I was going that slow and already in fifth. I wanted another gear to shift into.

I was running 14/38 with 20s. I think my motors strong enough to pull 14/34 with 18s. We'll see, I'll let you know.

I run 13 38 with 20's. I think 13 36 or 34 would work well. No matter what you run your always going to look for another gear. See ya

For sure... The gear spacing is so tight on the tecates and kx's... You can gear up until you barely can launch in first and still run out of top-end.... I am running a kdx dirtbike trans with a wider ratio 4th and 5th.. it rocks... I never hardly use 1st gear and I can outrun most 450 quads with the stock 13/42 sprockets

A KX500 case saver should fit the Tecate. Bolt spacing is the same and can be had on ebay from OXPARTS. They sell a 15 tooth ready case saver.

CR480R, Your using KDX bottom and KX topend right? What years of each?

run the 34 rear with your 14 front

38/20 * 18= 34.2

Thanks guys, I'm currently sold on trying a 34 rear with my 14 front with my new 18s.

John, thanks for the offer, but 12 would be too low for my setup. Funny how through the metamorphasis of my Tecate I have gone from an 11 tooth front to a 14 and a 42 rear down to a 34. Geared much higher now, I'm riding and am much more comfortable at higher speeds now too. The Tecate has evolved as my riding skill has evolved. Remember guys, I only bought this thing 18 months ago.
