**Safety Warning**
I was hanging some stuff on the wall of my workshop and the lights went out. Tried to reset the breaker and ....... one big arc flash later, knew something was wrong. I cut the wall apart and found my nail went right through the center of a 14 gage electrical wire. Turns out someone had run a wire for a light switch and some outlets at a very random height. I can see right through the hole in the wire.
Now I get to pull and hook new wires for my switch. Be careful out there!

I was hanging some heavy things, like post hole diggers, tree limb cutters, and garden implements. <would have just said "hoes and big tools," but those terms are not PC on the PC.>

Yeah you gotta be careful where you stick your big tool, you might damage the hoe.

I love when things are not built to code. There is suppose to be a nail gaurd anytime wire passes through a 2x4.

Also, mostly they run horizontal wires at outlet height, or lightswitch height, or ceiling level. This was probably 7 feet up - 2 feet below the roof.

wrong...there is only supposed to the nail plate if the wire that goes through the 2x4, 2x6 or anything is less than 1 1/4 in. I'm an electrician, I do this stuff everyday. The code book tell you when you need to nail plate, 1 1/4 or in the center of a 2 x 4, you don't need one. That wire looks right about the center of the stud. We put nail plates an every wire going through the studs in kitchens, because the cabinet guys like to use 3" screws, most plumbers do the same.

Depends on area, linn county(albany or.) says you have to use a nail plate anytime a wire runs through a stud.
