i've posted already in trikesylvania i have an extra 400ex sitting in my shop doing nothing ...i want a 350x .. i can't find a 350x close enough to be able to buy.. so i thought about putting a 400ex engine into a 350x frame.. looks like the jug and head are higher on the 40o but otherwise the engines are very similar. has anyone ever attempted this..what do you guys think. did i mention i have an abundance of aftermarket parts also for a 400ex. so this would work out pretty good if the engine would fit ..and then theres the oil tank...just thinking out loud
give me a little input..
thanks

I really think this would be a great trike setup. Electric start, a little more stock power, parts availability, aftermarket support (440x?? :naughty:), and if you could get ahold of a 2005+ engine, youv'e got reverse. For the oil tank, you could modify the backbone of the frame or the front downtube to hold the oil. That is, if you can't find a simple spot somewhere in the frame to just mount a tank.

what is the stock hp of a 400ex?
440cc is small to what a 350x can be made into.....e start and the oil tank is just dead weight IMO

Got that right.....
The 350X motor itself is heavy enough as is! and has tons of potential.

The 400ex engine is too big to do without frame mods and you need to deal with the oil tank. Mounting is all different too. If you want e-start and reverse in a 350x the 300ex engine with an fst 390 kit is the smarter choice. Even a built 330 would run with most 350x's.

i just thought of something.........remeber the old 6 speed 250x motors TC used to build, well they were 350x trannys in the 250x cases.
now why couldnt you use the 250x tranny in some 350x cases?
6th is just replaced with reverse but i think it would be easyer to swap the whole tranny....or at least have them on hand
edit... on second thought this might be harder then it seems

i knew a guy who had a 570cc 350x......now it hardly finished a race but thats big
not to mention that the 400ex cly studs like to pull out once you build them up

depends what you call frankinsteining.....you need a big bore kit to get to 452 anyway
now... add a 6mm powroll crank to that 452 and you got a 491.9cc

not to mention that the 400ex cly studs like to pull out once you build them upThat's an easy $50 fix ;)
I'm pretty sure you can't take a 350x to an overbore of 11mm even with a new sleeve. A 452x is an 86mm big bore with the 6mm stroke. To hit more then that I'm thinking you have to start using XR parts and toss the top end all together.
Edit: I just ran the numbers that's still only a 430. LOL, I'll stop while I'm behind on the 350x knowledge.

no it isn't oldschooling...LA sleeve offers a big bore able to be bored to 452.
one may find its way onto my build if it stretches out long enough. I just have to be through with it by summer. lol.

Yeah I know, that's why I ducked out and said I'll quit while I'm behind ;)

I'll admit to being clueless.
one opportunity this would present would be to have a brand new engine in a trike. nothing beats new.

Search. There was a member that posted a pic of the 400 in a 350X frame.

If you're talking about this one I'm waving the BS flag that it ever ran. One post with a bad pic and no mention how he addressed the oil system. The 350x engine is the same size as the 300ex engine and the 400ex engine is a bit bigger then that one.

I am pretty sure I'm not blowing smoke, but i do recall someone on the .org site made a complete new trike. He even posted a video of him beating around the yard a little bit while it was just a bare frame and a pop bottle gas tank lol. He never completely finished it, it was quite some time ago, so don't start hating if I am wrong.

That should be the link to the build up, or atleast the main thread. I didn't go through all the pages again....hopefully it works for you all.
