I have never seen these before on any trike. are they some old accessory or something someone just slapped on there? I have not been able to figure out their purpose for the life of me.

I also noticed that my axle is different from my 200x parts bike. The axle tappered down from the bearing carrier and this one seems to be staight the whole length of the axle?

Those look like the attachment pieces for an old number plate, can't remember the brand right off hand. Could be an old durablue or NASA aftermarket axle, definitely not stock.

Looks like aftermarket wheels too. Maybe it was an racer from back in the day. Post some pictures of the complete bike.:pics:

They look just like the ones on my Maier # plate, but then again, how many style spacers are there lol.

Looks like if you turn them towards the front of the bike you could attatch a number plate wou be my guess....

Hmmm,,,I see thats everyone elses guess too.

How were those pieces attached to the forks? Surely they werent ziptied on:rolleyes:. It does have a headlight but no mounting bracket which I cant find any where. I compared the axle to a stock one that I sold and this one deffinatly seems longer. Also it had a Bassani exhaust on it but ended up selling it to buy a few things for this project. Man, Im really kicking myself for that now.

Does anyone have pics of any old NASA or Durablue ads? Im cruious about what brand this axle is.

Heres a few more :pics: too.

I know a guy with a NASA 200X axle and it looks exactly the same as the one you describe, instead of tapering down at the hubs, it stays the same diameter. His is also a +2 or +4, I actually have a picture on my computer of the two axles side by side.

Looks like you have a cool period peice!

Im thinking its a +2 because it wasnt much longer than stock but enough to get me covered when riding through a mud puddle. I guess it wasnt a bad deal after all for 170 beans.

I'm willing to bet the axle alone was worth 150 out of that, possibly more. It's a vintage period piece.

Thanks for the info guys. I was going to do paint job on the frame and motor but since you mentioned that I think that Im going to do it. It runs great and the plastic isnt bad so that just leaves paint and a few odds and ends. I still need headlight mount, taillight, fork boots(ripped on last ride), and possibly a rear shock rebuild. I want to keep it as a rider though as its the only good 3wheeler I have to ride.

so is it a maier or something else? I would try to buy a number plate to match it if I could figure out what it was. or mabey one could be fabricated to fit it?

Are those Tecate rear wheels too?

I think you can probably get any old sheet of thin-ish plastic and drill some holes. I would not like to "buy" something that can so simply be made at home.

They sure look like oem 85-86 Tecate wheels to me. I think 87's had a rolled edge.

If they were kawi wheels wouldnt the bolt pattern be different?

After looking at them again, they do appear to have rolled edges. They could also be banshee wheels in the neighborhood of 89-91. They used the big bolt pattern for a few years. If they were painted, i would also think possible t-4 or Mojave. And yes, the bolt pattern is completely different. Wonder what hubs you have?

The rims were white when I got it. I thought it would look better with just polishing the aluminum but i still cant get the shine like the front.
The hubs were painted red but on the backside they are either silver or light gold, I cant remember. I will post a better pic of the wheels and huds later tonight.

As for the number plate, I think im going to set the pieces aside and fab up a headlight mount so I can ride at night. Right now I need a head light more than a number plate.

The bolt pattern is much bigger. Looks like tecate style pattern but im not sure.

So, does this mean that Tecate hubs fit the X axle, or the Tecate axle fits the X swinger, or...? I'm confused and intrigued...

Tecate axles DO fit the 200x carriers, they both use the same bearings, but I cant say whether or not sprockets line up.

Are they any wider than a stock X axle?

Edit: You know, now that you mentioned sprocket alignment, looking at the 3rd pic in the first post, does it look like the chain is twisted to the left a bit at the sprocket?
Might just be the angle though.

It does seem to curve to the right a little bit, but that sprocket looks bent too.

Im 99% sure those are tecate tires, rims, hubs, and apparantly the axle also, because the splines on a tecate are way different then 200x splines. (At least on the axle I have) Interesting that if it is in fact a tecate axle, that it takes the stock sprocket hub and brake hub...

I dont believe they are any wider.

I was completely unaware that the T3 axle would even fit in the X carrier.
I'd love to put a T3 axle in mine, if in fact, the sprockets do line up. I prefer the look of the hub/wheel combo over the X setup. Too bad I just replaced mine. Oh well, it's good to know.

well the chain adjuster snaped and I put a new one on but misadjusted the chain. I was working fine before it snaped and had no problems with the chain. But now when I roll the chain makes some noise so i think thats why it looks that way. Im going to readjust and take it for a ride today but I know the chain was straight before I had that problem.

First thing to remember is that 84-85 Tecate have far fewer splines on the axle ends. Hubs from a early Tecate cant be used on a 86 up. That in itself would rule out 84-85 axle and hubs. Wheels look more like the banshee wheels i mentioned earlier, that will fit any big tecate, movave hubs 85 up. My guess, 86-87 t3 or 87-88 t4 axle, since the two are different, with the obvious 86 up hubs. It may even be a whole t4 rear end??????????? The axle looks a bit big on the end to be a early T3.

I did some research and it looks like the 86/87 tecate axle but I think the wheels look slightly different from tecate but I havent any good pics of them. Last time I had the hud off, I noticed the splines were larger and fewer than others that ive seen. If someone can give me a spline count on the 86/87 tecacte, I will count mine and try to figure this mystery out. I want to find out if this an aftermarket or a tecate axle.
