I am trying to take off the rear axel to my 85 ATC 250R but i cant loosen the outer nut on the axel. Does anybody know any tricks to take off or loosen the nut?

hi the big nut on the axle is left hand threaded, so you go the opposite way to normal to undo it. then you`ll find a washer that the nut was pushing against, this covers a type of snap ring which you need to remove. with all of these removed you can then try and get the axle out.
good luck.

did you loosen (or can you?) the locking nut first? get plenty of wd40 on the job and if needs be, heat up the big nut itself to make it expand and then try again.

I know about the left hand thread and all, but what i need help on is getting that nut loose, when i get my adjustable wrenches set-up on the axel it is impossible to get loose, i will probably end up cutting the nut off and buying a new one.

i tried to loosen it but it wont budge no matter how much WD-40 i soak it with, are you sure about heating it i read the owners manual it said that heating the nut will mess up the threads?

i guess thats a risk you take, but you were going to cut it off in one of your posts, so what do you have to loose?? the nut and thread is all one item so if it does get damaged its easily replaceable.

I had this same problem with my old 250R. Heat that nut up cherry red, should come off.
well im a gorilla, but one time one of those nuts tested my strength, the problem solver, a pipe wrench and a 6ft peice of 1/4 1x4 steel tubing! with the trike on its side I had to freinds hold the tires plus I had some metal cramed through the brake disc and sproket to keep from turning, I got that damn nut loose! would you beleive even with an extra 6 ft of leverage it still was hard to move! YOIKES!

I use the big metal bar trick as well. The worst one I came a crossed I used 2 pipe wrenches, one on the nut and one on the axle, each had a big pipe slide over the end of the wrench. The big downside with this is the pipe wrenches can gouge up whatever they are holding.
it was either gouge it alittle or break out the cutting torch to the axle!
