I think a big part of it is personal preference.
I prefer K&N. I have one in my Jeep, and in both of our quads, and have never had a problem with any of them.
And, the quad and Jeep have both gone through some deep water and mud.

And you were using a K&N?
Did you have it oiled properly?

some people swear by k&n some people swaer by foam, i have a uni in my my z and rode in a sand pits and muddy trails and it would suck up a bit of water from time to time but your going to get that with any filter, but other then that it has been great

the kids i ride with all have k&n's with outerwears and love them and only get the litle bit of water like i do, but they seem to have to clean theres more often.

i think as long as u run a outerwear on your k&n your fine.:postwhore

If you have sand ON TOP OF your piston, you looking at a motor rebuild there!!

i did rebuild my motor, and some how when i took the head off the ring stuck to the piston. it was wisco piston. and yes every thang was sealed up. i did let a friend ride it and he whent throught water, and it died. and i started thanking it might of sucked it in there.

If you ride in sand you need to maintain the filter and use an Outwear. Dammit has rode his R in the Dunes for years with a K$N and has always sworn by them

it also acts as a pre filter

Yep, traps at least half the dust, so you just pull it off and you have an almost clean filter.

On my 400EX, I run a K&N and Outerwear, then I have a EHS racing lid that has a big outerwear on it. I have ran that for 4 years without any problems, never any dirt or sand in the intake. I clean and oil the filter 2 times a year. I run UNI's on my Big Red and Polaris ATP, and they work just as well.

In the future I will probably run UNI's because of the cost and they are much easier/quicker to clean than K&N's

IMO, k&n and uni are both good filters.
k&n is better for performance
uni filters the air better
i would run a prefilter with a k&n though.
if your going to ride in a lot of mud, water, or sand, i would use an uni especially with no air box or a drilled one. if your riding in dirt, light mud, light water, or light sand, i would use a k&n.

LOLWUT?! Are you saying "I would take the airbox off and stick a Uni on" or "if you have drilled/taken off the airbox, I would use a Uni"?

whouldnt runing a uni, whitout the air bok lid off or drilled holes. be the same as a k&n filter with the lid.

i ment if you had a drilled air box, or none i would run an uni instead of a k&n, because i would think that a k&n would just suck too much dirt, and an uni would be better.

Yes, I agree. A friend of mine stuck K&N's on his 700 go-kart, and I took it through a patch of mud... shot up a nice roost, but the filters were clogged to hell and back and it ran on 2 cylinders instead of 3, so we rinsed the filters in some solvent and applied WD-40 and kept riding.
