View Full Version : 85 250R brake line guide and helmet holder.
Does any one have pic's of NOS or good OEM parts on there bike. I bought the front brake guide and the helmet holder. The holder does not look like the part in the Honda parts catalogue and the brake line guide was broken when it arrived so i had to make a new wire.
85 250R only please so i can get a look at the propper parts.
Pictures on bikes would be best so i can see where i'v gone wrong.
I'v put the holder on wrong as i didnt know where it went (i have since found out) but is it the right one for an 85 ?
Also have i put too many bends in the brake line wire, i coppied the one that came but i'v since seen one that wasnt quite as elaboratly bent ?
Thanks.

That brake line guide you have there is 86, , I don't believe the 85 came with a helmet holder but the one on your bike looks like its from the trx, not the atc model.
An 85 brake line guide will look like this one

Heres a link to some 86 parts with the brake line and helmet holder in them.

I believe it went into your stash  Didn't Stacey make some of these as well? I know I wanted one but couldn't bring myself to put on a nos one, even if I did get it for a $10 bill.

The bracket is also different from 85 to 86 but unless you are doing a 100% oem restore why worry about it? Any brakeline guide is better than not running one at all. If you ask Pete maybe he will dig out that oem 85 and snap some pics of the bracket side of it.
Er pete................ could you take some good close up pics of the 85 item and Jpeg them to me please. Also could you measure from one end to the other and tell me how long it is inside the wire hoop.
Another hour of my short life gone

That helmet holder is exactly like the one on my 1986 350x. You have it on there wrong though. Rotate it 90 degrees counter clockwise.

here's some pics of both 85 and 86 guides....if you need anymore measurments let me know....:D :D :D
I like the 86 better.But I shur could use that 85?:D
Thanks for the detail pic's Pete :beer
So i copied the original for nothing, as it was clearly bent out of shape. And i bought the wrong year to start with.
I'll make a new wire same as the OEM 85 some time this week, (got a week off on antibiotics  ) Might even have a look at making a bracket for it. Cheer's Pete, dont slate it too much when you see it in Wales .

You better stop running those bars. The bend is before the end edges of the bar clamps and it scores the top of those aluminum bars. Then on a good jump someday they'll snap right off. I've seen it happen!!

< Look at the pics, you'll figure it out....
I'm going to swap those bar's when i find a set with the right space between the mounts. Their just what the bike came with.
I made another wire, with more success, nearly there. But i need to get some more wire before i make an 85 one (only had a short bit left). Also i'v played with making a mounting bracket/plate of the 85 style. Not perfect and no pic's yet, but i think i have a simple way to form them now :p i hope.

Nice work. You planning on making those available to other members? I'd buy a couple.
If you could make a 85 with a 86 mounting bracket I would be all over it!!!!

For an 86 with 85 wire, Glamis has an 86 350X guide (same ?) item # 270134746789 , i'll make a new wire for it and send it to you if youre real keen ?
Dammit! -
If these 85's are any good i'll make a few to sell. But if it looks shite i won't !!
I'v looked at the 86 part and i'll have a go at it. But it will be much thinner material.
I need to get to the builders for some thick steel to make a former for the 85's, so they all come out the same (and right) so i may be another week before i get a good bracket that can be mass made.
As for the wire guide, i'll do them as soon as the wire is available on monday :Bounce
Right, because i had one, i had a go at the 86 first. Not a bad first attempt :D

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj311/thetri-zgods/04022008117.jpg
And on the bike with a wire guide, it looks a little better. This was relatively easy to make.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj311/thetri-zgods/04022008116.jpg
The 85 part though was a totally different story. I will not be making another one, it's nearly impossible to bend the metal to form the sides holding the wire. It beat me in the end.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj311/thetri-zgods/04022008118.jpg
Over all, not a wasted project but the 85 is far beyond my skill. I'll make another 86 out of some thicker material (original was 3m ) . Heres the final pic's side by side. The 85 is crap :(

Thats the thing, it only needs to be functional.
Anyone who performs a real "restore" will insist on a NOS OEM part.
But for you, me and the rest of us, ANYTHING that works is better than nothing.
A crude tool and die is all you need to get them all looking the same.
Pardon my French, but the 85 was too much of a tawt to bother with again. It takes too long to form. The 86, although the more complex design, was much easier to make. I was 6 hrs just on these two parts. And i doubt i could work any faster on the 85's.
86's, no problem. I could turn out 12 in a good half day if i did a batch. Just seems too much work and too long time to sell them for what their worth, which isnt much.

why not buy one off of a dirt bike if you do not want an original?
