Hey Tecate guys...I need your help. I am restoring an '86 Tecate now. The engine was in desparate need of a rebuild, so I have it on the bench torn clear down. I know this question has been asked before, and I searched the boards, but I can not find exactly what I am looking for.

I have purchased a new 1985 KX250 Tecate cylinder thinking it was the same as the '86. However, it appears the power valve set-up is different between the two motors. Has anyone tried to put their '86 KIPS valves into an '85 KX250 engine? Will this work?

I appreciate any input you Tecate experts can give me! I will post pictures of the restore later...currently it is just bagged and tagged....:wondering

Well, i believe that the cylinders from the 86-87 tecate are the EXACT same as the 85 kx only. But i heard somewhere that the powervalves are in fact different. But since the cylinders are the same, the components would also interchange. I'd like to see both of the powervalves for comparison sake. Maybe the tecates have a different shape so they open up the auxilary boost ports later in rotation, and not as far at wot?

On the '86 KXT cylinder, the opening where the shaft that times the power valves goes through is machined clear through and has a plug on each end. The '85 KX cylinder only has a plug on one end. My guess is the valves may work in the '85 cylinder, but the shaft is not...I am not sure yet though. I need to finish tearing the '86 cylinder apart I guess and go from there.

I have heard the same as tecat-z. Rumor was the power valve timing was different for the 86-87 kx's.

This guy here is parting out an 85 KX. Maybe he has some power valves for sale.

If you get the PV pieces you should be good to go.

The '85 cylinder is not the same as the '86...'86 valves do not work in a '85 cylinder or vice versa ...The '85 cylinder has a bridged exhaust and smaller subs than a '86... An '85 cylinder will fit on a '86 case, but a '86 cylinder will not fit a '85 case without mods as the shafts on a '86 valves potrude through the base surface and into the case...
