View Full Version : How Often Do You Guys Tighten and Lube Your Chain??

How often do you guys have to tighten lube your chain. I noticed in the manual it says you only needed to check it every 30 days!!!! Seems a little long to me. I am constantly doing tightening and lubing before every ride. I got a brand new non o-ring chain last season, but it looks like I will have to replace it this dune season already. I ride quite a bit. One sand trip I went through 15 gallons of gas on my R alone.
I wonder if I am riding it too tight and prematurely wearing it?? It is hard to tell correct tension with an extended swinger. I think if I built a chainguide back by the rear sprocket I might be able to run the chain a titch looser without having to worry about throwing it.
Also what do you guys use for chain lube?
I have always used synthetic 90w oil, but on my last trip to the dunes I tried some Belray chain lube, hoping the sand wouldn't stick to it. The belray held up pretty well. It didn't attract sand like the oil did, but it wasn't quite as durable as the oil is, and I would have to lube it more often.
Thanks for the input.

You never use oil on your chains, stuff sticks to oil and just accelerates the wear.

I have always set my chain tension to have about 1 to 1.5 inches of slack with me sitting on the trike. With o or x-ring chains I don't run any lube at all. I just soak it with WD40 after every wash and that's it. The DID X-ring on my R now has been there about 3 years now. No problems. I go through sprockets a lot faster than chains. I replace the sprockets as soon as I see the first sign of hooking.

Dammit is correct. Get an o-ring or an x-ring and you'll adjust it once when it's new and then you'll be good for quite awhile. An x-ring is better than an o-ring because there's less rotating friction when you spin the wheel, therefore less horsepower loss. You cannot clean it with a wire brush though, because it will damage the o-rings.

Lube it every ride and I rarely adjust it.

Always buy a good chain, my friends 200X needs adjusting ever ride or every other ride. Constantly stretches.....
