I test rode a 250SX this morning. Found it on craigslist for 600. I know I can get it for less money, it needs a battery, headlamp bezel, and rear fenders. It has new tires all the way around, and started first kick with a cold motor. What do you guys think? What do I need to look for before I pay for it? any goofy things with the SX's? Thanks for the input in advance.

Go for it. I love my 250SX, I don't know of much wrong with them. Maybe someone here will chime in.
If it is a good one you wont be mad with your purchase.:beer

The 250SX is a great COMPLIMENT to your more performance ATC's.

It has very few flaws:

The 85 model has a BIG problem with water entry in the rearend and it can get very expensive and near impossible to find a good used diff and driveshaft. But, the 86/87 model just needs to be taken apart and sealed up and that problem will be non-existent.

All 3 years have a simple shift pin that comes loose or snaps within the left case and it's an easy fix. There is also a one way clutch that goes bad on all of them that allows the kickstarter to slip. But, if you have a good SX, you'll never use the kicker...

Poor suspension but fun nonetheless, Add a 200X front end and you get much better front end action and a disc brake.

Check out the diff fluid, bring a 17mm wrench to check it (don't overtighten - those caps snap VERY easy). That motor should be near silent with plenty of power too.

I still start mine a couple times a year, I love it but it just isn't up to the tasks of an 86 200X or 350X. But, they are allot of fun to simply cruise around on and thats why I call them a cadillac ATC..............

My aunt has one and it is a blast to piddle around in the creeks on. It's so nice to have that reverse gear when you want to get in some tight areas and cut trails. I love it and hope to add one to my collection sometime.

I would say, as long as the motor is quit, the bearings are good, and the diff is solid, pick it up. That would be a steal in my area.

I need to get me one of those.

I just got it home. I paid $500.00 for it. Diff oil is a little dirty but not too bad, I will change the fluids in it this week, as well as get a battery for it. It is too dark for pictures, so hold on until tomorrow for those.

so here are the blurry pictures..... (I shake alot). You can tell that it has set outside due to the moss and mold that this thing has growing on it. It will get a wash job once the hose thaws out a bit.

How did you post the pics??? I just bought a 85 250sx and tried to post pics but failed. Looks pretty good. Mines's got a bit of head noise but i'm hoping it just the clearances. My tank looks like s***. I want to get a plastic one.

Always up for a ride, if you are on the atv connection website, go to the where to ride..... I'm on the Puget Sound Area Riders Thread, same name.... we are always riding, talking smack, and hanging out with each other. A while back, 62 of us went to Florence together. We also meet at the Casino's for Breakfast every few weeks.

Looks like its going to clean up nice..... doesn't look like it could have been stored outdoors for too long though...... I'll take moss over rust any day, lol. For 500 bucks looks like you found a killer deal. :beer

Dude, you got a deal, it should clean up nice. I think everyone should at least RIDE an SX, they're great in the woods, creeks, climbing. An all around bullet proof machine, I've loved the 2 I've had! Good luck w/ it, TGG..................
