Things have begun to come together on this build. The frame was blasted last week and we painted it on Saturday. All new oem plastics and correct decals will be used on this build. A chrome +6 arm with a NEW oem 86 shock will be used on the back end. New 76mm pro-x cylinder, and billet head will be used on modified cases, as well as a 3mill crank to help square up the bore to stroke ratio a bit. Mark Baldwin currently has the trans, and assembling modified billet gearsets with revised 88-89 trx 5th and 6th ratios. Moshes' are handling the seat end of the project and can't wait to see it. A full billet clutch with oem fibers and steels, and 89 upgrade kit will be used. A dura blue X-33 gun drilled +2 +4 hollow axle will fit to a LSR billet carrier. This is a friend of mine's bike that is being taken from a clapped out rag that he bought 2 mos ago, to an exceptional level. It will be using a 39 pwk, relatively tame port timing, and in frame exhaust. We are trying to retain a lot of reliability in this bike, yet still have it snappy to haul him around. He's a big guy at 6-3 and 240. The owner is the guy standing next to the bike in the background. Oh, and the Camaro is our friends as well. This ones goin to the next level.:naughty: He rolls BIG!

What kind of bars are on the trike? That's gonna be a trick azz trike. My friend is looking for a bone stocker to do that same thing to. He was goin to go with the 350 pv kit but decided against it. Keep us updated on the build.

Looks good so far Mark.. Got any more pics to update the progress?? I'll have to swing by and check it out first hand. LAterzz:TrikesOwn
This will be a great one to watch.Looks like you guys are going all out.
Let me ask though, and excuse my ignorance, but is the 89 TRX gears a tighter ratio? For like drag racing?
What exactly is the benifit of using them vs.the earlier years?
That sucker should fly when done, and have the "looks good" appeal as well.
Keep up the good work!

Well, it's been a while since we've had any new activity since it's kind of a waiting game for parts to come in. Progress has been made though, with the swingarm finished up, and parts back from the anodizer. There is still so much to to to this bike, but sometimes it's best to be slowed down a bit so different and sometimes better ideas come about. Just thought we'd share a few pics of the current state of the bike. The best part is still to come of course. The engine! Oh yeah, should be very nice looking and of course powerful. But as i mentioned earlier, this is not a drag only bike by any stretch. Yes it will run well, but it is going to be in a somewhat tame state of tune. Again, we want to build alot of reliability into this bike for now, but with lots left on the table for future growth.:naughty:

Looking awesome Ed:drool:   . Could you do me favour though and spend the next day building a really nice bike stand to work off of:lol:  ;) . Killer Shop and I'm sure all the tools you could dream of and your using the wheel for a stand:rolleyes: . Just Kidding , I'm tired of working on Shannon's Banshee in the basement and would almost kill for a shop like that.

We use two different places for the metal finishing. Saporito finishing outside of Chicago does the anodizing. I have a friend who is an airline mech at Midway, so he takes it there for me. Triplex plating does the metal di-chromate finish. Located in Michigan City, In. Roughly 25min from my house. I take it there and and usually it's a 1-2 day turnaround. And Ross, the tire, what can i say. The tire started out as a early fix when forks went on, and it's still there. It'l be a roller real soon.

We finally got all the stuff at the end of last week to finish the engine. Seemed to take forever. But ayy, now we're rollin' again. Assembled the engine from cases up Friday night, and installed it saturday along with all of the other things necessary. Thinkin' sometime next week we can finally add fluids and see what happens:naughty: My buddy Mark is gettin' pretty stoked right about now! Remember this is his first trike ever:eek: He has a banshee, and has had many fast street bikes and cars and adapts to this kind of stuff quickly. So he should be just fine. We sure have high hopes for this bike to run strong, and be reliable. As we didn't set it up in full race tune. But it should be more than enough to keep his attention, and learn the correct ways of riding a trike. We'll post up some finished pics hopefully in a week or two. Kinda depends on the weather too, possibly with a nice ride report.

1.Will that ESR expansion chamber and muffler work on a modded 250R motor well?
2. Does that ESR expansion chamber come with that exhaust mount that mounts to the frame?

Well, we got the bike fired after purchasing a new oem cdi and coil. The coil wire was broken coming right off the coil, and the wire cant be replaced due to it being vulcanized into the coil body. The cdi provided us with spark on the initial test still on the table. But then failed completely a day later:confused: . Strange. After getting the new components, we filled all fluids, fattened her wayyy up and she fired on the 3rd full kick. Did a few heat cycles in the garage, retorqued and rolled it out. Very smooth and torquey but very intentionally wet. Put about an hour on it like this and finally flashed the plug. Dropped pilot, leaned needle and put in a smaller main and now we can finally begin some real tuning. It sounds very different from a standard liquid R at idle. The extra displacement can be heard. It's running pretty good for still being fat. But with the weather and newness of it all, were not gonna rush anything. But for now, we're very pleased with the bike, and haven't had any mechanical issues. :beer

what is the update on this bike?
Is the pipe and silencer a direct bolt on?
tecat-z
04-21-2008, 11:09 PM
This was a very straight forward fitting pipe and silencer combo. But you have to switch the oem top mount to the lower skid plate mounting fixture. We used some machined aluminum bushings to get the silencer fitment perfect with the pipe. And to allow proper clearance. In the end it fits outstanding. Like many aftermarket items, sometimes a bit of extra fitting pays off big. This bike is running very well, but the weather has been really bad and still don't have much time on it. Current jetting is a 48 pilot, stock DGH needle on 2nd grove from top, and a 175 main. Running 40:1 Torco leaded fuel, and full synthetic oil. Keep in mind this a 344cc engine and we're still a bit fat on top. But, we need some consistent warm weather to really clean it up. It has a very smooth power delivery, but extremely strong. Not what i would consider peakey, just very strong, like any large displacement 2 stroke. So far we are very happy.

The exhaust was bought through ESR. My friend also has the same exhaust on a bone stock 85. Esr's prices sometimes fluctuate for some reason on exhaust. I would expect to pay around 350 or so for the pipe/silencer combo. I can't remember the name of the swingarm builder off hand, but they were located in Utah. I'll look for the name. They did a fantastic job, and it took roughly 7 weeks to get and cost $475.

Mark and i say thanks! After all, the Moshes are the ones who made the seat possible. And what a job it is!!!!!! Outstanding work, and highly recommended. The pipe seems to work well so far, but we haven't had good weather for final tune. And considering the condition this rag was in when this project began, we really had no baseline to compare to. But this is more of a do it all bike anyhow, so if we are "giving up" some power, we'll never know.

Just a few pics from our tuning session yesterday. The R's running very strong, and even got some sweet video. Seems to work best by slightly short shifting. Gobs of mid to mid high pull. Jetting is now pretty much set at a 48 pilot, stock needle in middle groove, and a 172 main. Still.......... a bit heavy on top, but until it gets a little warmer well hold off on the 170. This weekend will be the first real test of power, reliability, and overall 'nastyness':naughty:

Well, i've been tinkering with dirt bikes since i was 13. Tearing em down and building them up. So i can't stand half --sed anything. Ask them and they will tell ya. Now i'm working on a friends 86 Tecate. Frame and forks are done. I should have the engine done in a week or two. Just waiting on the crank. Should be a very nice bike as well. Now, i just need to finish my OWN 86 tri-z.:naughty: And to think, that for years i was the only one in my area, keepin' it real.
