View Full Version : Twist throttle and handlebar options?

The trike rally proved to me that my R setup is completely inadequate for anything other than duning so, I'm looking at twist throttles and different bars.

What are my options for twist throttles? Looking to put one on my 1986 250R with a 38mm PWK carb. Never looked into it before so not sure what all is out there besides Motion Pro (and I think there's several different options to choose from even with just Motion Pro).

Also, I'm looking for a specific type of handlebar. I need something about medium height but with very little sweep. Not perfectly straight but much straighter than most trike bars. I don't want them to bend backwards towards the rider too much and I also don't want them to point upwards at the ends. I want them perfectly flat if possible. My current bars have way to much sweep so in a tight turn my wrist ends up at a really bad angle. To compensate for that I had to move them forward which has the ends pointing up which also is not good for the wrist at all. I need to know which manufacturers and models sound like they fit the bill so I can check them out. I need options that fit in the R triples really well. Some dirtbike bars bend up a little too close to the clamps. Pics would be awesome.

Heres what to get for both. For the bars, get cr high bar and for the twist throttle, get a motion pro turbo and cable #01-0227. It works for my current setup, thats a 39 pwk and it works for 38 a/s also. Probably many others too, like a 27 pd, that is on my 200x.

I'm running a similar setup to deathman on the ole 500R dragger and the flat tracker. Renthal CR high bend bars but with Magura 314 series twist throttles. I've had the turbo model from motion pro and it still takes (to me) a lot more pull then the Magura 314. Let me check around for a sec, I think I got a good handlebar shot of the flat tracker around here somewheres.

Here's some info on the motion pro web site regarding pull or rate.

I have flex bars on it now. Here is a pic of cr high bars on a bike of mine(a quite old picture). I don't have a twist on it in that either. http://pictureposter.allbrand.nu/pictures/deathman53/250r+12-01.JPG.html

Magura 314 is a really nice throttle! Much better imo than the generic one that motion pro sells in there kits. I have the Magura with a motion pro cable hooked up to a 39pwk on a 250R.

In Dennis Kirk cataloge
Magura 314 part no. 57-239 $18.99
Motion pro cable for Magura part no. C9703 $16.99

The Magura has a really short pull doesn't it? Do you think there's enough control there for a desert bike? Those short pull throttles would be fine for dunes or drags but it seems like it might not be ideal for some real varied terrain.

Off hand I dont know the pull ratio, but It seemed the same as any other twist throttle I have used.

If you do go with a motion pro throttle I wouldn't go with the "Turbo" model. I have had a few of those and the cheap china housing cracks when you tighten it up. The vortex model is much better, but the OEM cr and magura are the ones I've had best luck with.

Just looked in the Dennis Kirk cataloge and read that you can change the Magura from either a 68 degree motorcross turn to a 77 degree enduro turn. That makes sense as I remember when installing it as there were 2 locations to choose from on the throttle tube to place the barrel on the cable.

keep in mind the vortex has a much faster ratio, I had a vortex, It turned too fast. It was hard to keep control with it. I eventually switched it out to a crf450r twist throttle, much better in everything(note: this was on my crf450r hybrid quad). I will agree, the cr twist throttle is much better quality than ANY motion pro. I didn't have any motion pro turbo's crack, I have 3 of them, just make the allens snug, just so it doesn't move on you.
