Hello, I have a question about the kicker shafts on the 86/87 200X. I picked up a spare 86/87 200X motor that I had planned to install on a 86 200X project of mine. Well, I noticed that the diameter of the kicker spline on the "new" motor is much larger than the original motor. So the kicker from the original engine will NOT fit! If I go and purchase a new kicker assembly from Service Honda, how can I be sure that it will fit? Thanks

one of the engine's can't be an 86/87 because the kicker shafts from 86 and 87 are the same, so i believe...

pictures are your best bet... post some of both engines and we can tell you what to get... otherwise engine serial numbers and a description of both engines...

They are "supposed" to be the same. I'll bet that the later run 87 shafts were changed because they were snapping. Go look it up at Service Honda......

I have heard of different diameters before.....

I think the 86 had the small shaft and large shaft for some reason, erectordale told me this when I was having troubles with my kicker.

A couple pics of the two motors. The motor that is installed has a spline diameter of roughly 18mm while the other motor is approximately 14mm. I was looking at part numbers on Service Honda's website. They list the same kick start assembly and the kick start splined shaft for both the 86 & 87 year 200X. What gives??

Man thats weird. I believe my 86 has the smaller spindle. I bet it will be easy to find a kicker for the larger spindle than the small one.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I checked the engine serial numbers on Service Honda's Website. The motor with the large diameter spline (18mm) is a 1987 200X motor. Wondering if anyone out there with a 87' 200X would mind checking their kick start spline diameter and let me know? Also.....if anybody has a 87' 200X kickstart assembly they want to sell, please let me know. Thanks

I have a new OEM, probably won't sell it though and not sure what year it's from? Whats the part number for 86 and or 87?

Last I new they had them new for 87$, not too bad....

Dirtcrasher,

Yeah, I agree that a new kicker assembly is the way to go. I'm concerned that the new kicker they ship won't fit the spline on the 87' motor. I plan on speaking to a salesman there to see if they can assure me what size spline shaft the new part will fit.
If you dont mind, could you measure the diameter of the hole on your OEM kicker and let me know?

I haven't even took off the PJ's yet... TOO damn cold!!

If you load the "remote desktop" Ser H gives you the motor serial numbers to go buy. You have to add it to your cart to view this option but that will give you the right kicker part number.

I'd much rather have the large shaft diameter!

I'll bet the engine sidecase changed as did the oil seal too.....

Dirtcrasher,

I have used Service H's remote desktop, but I am unsure how to load the engine serial number data into "my cart" to obtain parts numbers. My engine serial number is TB05E-6400183. Service Honda lists two different kicker part numbers for the 86-87 200X: 28300-HB5-000 and 28300-HB5-670. Help me out.

I'm ALWAYS watching 86/87 200X parts :naughty:

I just have so dam many that I let most things pass by and most things on there are junk.....

ATV4LIFE1

Mine is the 000 part number and the largest inside diameter of the kicker is appx .610 which probably fits a 15mm shaft.

The 670 part number usually represents most of the newest parts runs or 87.

UPDATE - I checked SH...

86 - 000
87 - 670

They are 82.62 for anyone that needs one!!

It shows no others for the 86. I am near positive that it is an 87 upgrade only and the 86 motor that someone had one in had been upgraded.......

Dirtcrasher,
I really appreciate your help with this. I may have some more questions for you as I continue this project. Thanks again.

How about selling one of those 86/87 NOS on/off switches you have cheap?:naughty:

LOL... Buy one you tight wad, there still on there!!

I rarely will sell ANY 86/87 200X part.

I actually was ready to sell a perfect axle a few weeks ago, I had recalled it having a crummy spline. The buyer wanted a close up of that damage and when I looked at it I thought - This is crazy, I know I'll need one of these someday..... So I told him sorry but to it wasn't for sale any longer.

Yeah, I was kidding around about the switch. I see that same E-bay seller has more of those switches for sale. They are reasonably priced as well....at least I think so. Later man
