I like the 85 colors myself, but you could even go with 86 colors. Dont know if they make white for those years though.

Seeing as it's not hard to make an '83 look like an '83, I'd stick with the original look. If you have the original '83 black forks, I just don't think they look good with the blue boots. It looks really cool with the black forks, black fork boots and black seat. But that's just me....

My two cents..... OEM all the way. I like the 83's with the red, white and black. As the previous poster said..... the black boots, black lower legs, etc....... all looks sharp together. :beer

i like to see the 85 look but to do it right you need to polish the bottom of the forks since 85's has a natural aluminum look...not black

I really am not a big fan of either of those combos, but if I had to choose it would be the '85. I prefer the polished forks and blue seat.
Are you a fan of white? I did my '83 X in a blue/white combo and think it looks great, those colors really go well together.

Keep it looking like a 1983 model. Not as flashy, but classic nonetheless.

how would someone go ahead and polish the forks? what tools and supplies does it take to make them look shiny? i have seen people on here do it, i just dont know how its done.

Go to NAPA and get a green, brown, white scotch brite pads.

Start with green then brown them white. Then polish with mothers aluminum polish.

after i sand all the inperfections out of the aluminum ( starting with 220 ending with 400 grit) i use a buffing wheel on my 1hp bench grinder.

just a normal spirial buffing wheel is all you need with the brown or white compound.

i only use www.eastwood.com buffing suplies
