Ok, So there was already a post on engine paint but i guess since it wasn't MY  post no one wanted to answer my question on the same topic.

Anyways...

My question is: To paint the engine, Everyone is saying high heat rattle cans are ok to use, BUT what is needed to do for prep work?

Can I mask off the frame, take out the spark plug, plug the hole and spray away?[

Do you sand it first, primer it second THEN paint?

Take the entire engine out first and paint the engine piece by piece?

What is the correct way to do it?

I dont think you have to take it out, just degrease and clean it very well give it a light sanding with 220. Then mask off the trike and give it a couple light coats, a few minutes in between each coat.

Got a power washer handy?
Put a bad plug in there if you paint it.
Whesleys White wall cleaner works good at getting the bulk of dirt off.
Masking off stuff that you don't want painted is a deff plus.

You want to do it rite?

I would just take it out to paint. Keeping it in the frame is pretty tricky to make it look decent. You cant get the bottom of the engine or the back of it real well. Taking it out isnt hard on the old 200xs. 86s are kinda hard to do though. I painted mine with high heat duplicolor and lots of clear coat, then let cure for 2 weeks and its very durable and wont scratch off.

Your engine looks very good. :beer

Now how did you get the middle and top grate part not to have paint on it? did you sand off the paint afterwards, or did you remove/mask before painting?

Yep, just sanded it off when the paint cured.

I think I will try to remove the engine to paint it. I found the pages in my manual, is there anything else that it doesn't tell you, that should be done prior, or during removal?
