Personally I think 200X's are geared perfectly from the factory - but if you must go "faster", replace the 12 tooth front c/s sprocket with a 13 tooth then readjust out your chain tension - note, if you're sprockets are too beat, you will need to change them all out along with your chain as a set. Now all this is given assuming you are still running 22" rear tires.

yeah. im interested in this too... I've got 18 inch turf tamers on my 200x and i was curious about the sprockets and what changing them out would do for me. Obviously it lost some top end speed going to the 18 inch tires...

either the 13 or 14 tooth sprockets should work well with 18" tires strictly for speed purposes. If you plan on going up steep, rugged, heavily wooded terrain, or in deep thick mud, that set-up will not work. I currently have a stock 12 tooth and 22" tires on my 200x, and I have to feather the clutch constantly in that type of terrain because of the lack of low end torque. If I could stay at 1/2 throttle or better it wouldn't be a problem, but that's hard to do when you're dodging trees and rocks, lol

So if I like the low end torque I ought to just stay with the stock, im not to unhappy with the speed of the machine any how. I do feel like when I am in 5th and it is revving out that it feels like there should be a 6th gear there. Guess thats why they revamped the engine in '86... :D

If you want to make your 83-85 200x a 6 speed you can pull a couple of parts out of an 81-85 xr200r. My bro. is building one now, so if you need the parts list u can PM him here on the board (tdup), or e-mail him at travisdup@alltel.net
