How difficult is it to swap an 86' 200x motor into a 83-85' 200x? What kind of fabrication is required?
Thanks

You would have to do some cutting and welding. The 83-5 & 86-7 motors do not interchange.

You should do a search on this, it's been brought up many times, but I can't remember anyone ever actually doing the swap- I'm pretty sure the 2nd gen. 200X's motor is a lot taller & you're going to have to either lower the cradle, or find a way to make room up top. Good luck.

Why not remove all the cosmetics and get it back to an 86?Your frame is still good- right. Find a shock and swinger and your chassis is fixed. Maybe there is more to it then that and what i saw.
But i would strive toward getting a decent 86 out of it. If not sell me or someone the running 86 engine and buy a 85 motor to build it right. Just MO.
What does the 86 need to be an 86 again other than plastics and crap.

Right now im just feeling out my options. I am curious about this because there are many 1st gen 200X rollers for sale in my area for cheap.
As far as making my bike an 86 again...I dont know if thats going to be very easy. All the plastics and gas tank are 1st gen. And the frame has been altered. The piece that you hook the seat into has been cut off. Dont get me started on the swing arm and rear shock setup. I just feel that it is going to be too expensive and time consuming to bring it back to a legit 86'. Therefore, I want to see what else i can do. The motor is nice. It starts right up. So I want to find an 86' roller or something and put this motor into it.
Im updating my "check out my new 200x" thread in a few minutes and you can take a look. I took a bunch of pics and you will be able to see the extent of the modification.

You'd go crazy trying to stuff that motor into the 85 but I can understand your situation. I can't believe how many 86/87 200X's have been on EBAY this year. The dam things are always too far away!!! Keep your eyes open, you'll get a better one in time.

One major problem you would have with the swap is definitely the height issue. The 86 has a huge rocker box because of the valve adjuster cams. Also the exhaust exits out of the head at a different angle, though I'm not sure if that would present much of a problem. Your brake pedal pivot would end up being an issue too. Stick with finding an 86 roller, it was a better machine all the way around than the first gens.
