Ok I have all the wiring on my 1979 atc 70 hooked up right and I think its not getting any spark because it has a switch rigged up and what kind of

switch will work for sure like the Off On Off kind ?

for killing the motor and for when you start it ?

Thanks, James

Are you serious or joking ?

Is there any kind of switch that I can buy at a local hardware store just to test if its not getting spark because it has a bad switch ?

If you think the switch is causing it, then just eliminate it for now. If theres still no spark, then it wasn't that.
Honestly, you could go a buy a light switch and it would work. All your doing by turning it to the ON position is completing the circuit, when you turn it to the OFF position, it breaks the circuit, your kill switch works the same way. So by eliminating the switch, you eliminate the break in the circuit which means you SHOULD have spark, if not, then it could be a bad coil, ground, etc.

Actually I think the ATC 70 switches are a grounding type system, meaning that when the switch is in the off position, the ignition is grounded, cutting off the spark. If you remove the switch, it is the same as leaving it in the on position, except it removes the possibility of the switch being bad. So if you unplug the switch and still dont get spark, the switch is probably not your problem.

I hooked up my 1983 atc 70 coil today and still no spark the wires look hooked up right.

Also the points look clean

So I can just unhook the switch completly and then try to pull the rope and see if theres any spark ?

Yes. If it doesnt spark still, then Id look at anything you havent checked yet. If it does spark, then you need to fix/replace the switch.

Should I disconnect the Dark Green (Ground) wire running from the switch and disconnect the Black Hot wire ?

I just don't see anything else that could cause it.

post a picture if you can so we can see if you have your wiring harness hooked up right.

Do yourself a favor and buy a new condensor and points and plug, worth doing right the first time.

If you cant afford the honda condensor then just buy a car one and wire it in up near the coil, just connect it to the wire that comes from the engine. When you buy it just ask for a single wire type condensor (the body of it has to be connected to ground).

I don't think that is an ATC70 wiring diagram - neutral switch and headlight controls???????????

That 3rd ground needs a wire to the frame.

james9r9r

Ok first of all is there a 3rd ground ?

Second if there is a third ground where do I wire it to the coil ?

Does it look like I have my wiring right ?

On my 1983 atc 70 all I have is the black wire running from the motor into a connector with the black wire running from the Off On Off switch into the connector along with the other green wire running from the Off On Off switch into the coil as a ground then I have a black wire running from the connector into the coil...

I don't see anywhere to connect another wire at the coil to run to a frame ground
and my 70 runs and sparks fine ?

I touched the plug to the head of the motor ?

Try plugging it up to the mains and see if that works

Go touch the plug to the main frame, to metal, not to the head or the tank or any where else. You may have to scrape off some paint to get a good ground. Touch the tip of the plug to the frame and pull the starter cord. Make sure the plug is well in the HT cap and hold it by the rubber HT cap, not the plug !!

Well the screw on part at the end of the plug is missing ?

And why can I touch my 1983 atc 70 plug to the head and see spark. I don't touch it to the frame ?

luke

Use another plug that has it then !!!!! go try ?? if you gat a spark, then that was the problem ?!?!

james9r9r

LOL Ok I don't know what to think I am going to try putting on a screw in cap to the end of the plug then if that fails I am going to

According to your diagram, that switch disconnected will be in the "run" position.

Your coil may or may not have a wire coming from the harness that goes under the head of one of the coil mounting bolts to the frame.

Get a meter, check the coil for the right resistance and stop wondering if it's good. Untape the electrical harness a few inches back and forth by the coil and you may find a green wire that got cut.

Most of the 70's seem to not fire due to the points being set right and I've read posts of a plastic piece in there that wears out and affects the opening and closing duration.

The points just begin to open when the (T) on the rotor aligns with the index mark on the crankcase.

Points look good and clean

All the connections are good, clean, and tight.

I disconnected the whole Off On Off switch and still nothing I touched the plug to the bare metal frame and to the head No Spark.

What else could it be the whole Strator Plate ?

If you got shocked then its firing. You prolly didn't have the plug grounded good when trying to make it spark or you have a bad plug or cap
