View Full Version : "X" stamped on my 350x frame?

Noticed it for the first time today. There's an "X" stamped on the frame of my 350x. It's not part of the VIN. It's near the ID tag. Anybody know what that's all about?

i know on the 85 200x's dealers were supposed to put an X on the engine case once the kickstart issue had been redone. maybe honda had some kinda recall on the 350x?

Just looked at my 86 - it has a U stamped. Looks like a U turned 90 deg.

I put an X or an U on all off my trikes so when they get stolen I can retreive them easier:lol: :lol: Anyone else?

i know certin new 350x motor si had gotten had diffrent letters stamped on them on the undersid ewhen they were donated to tech schools.

Do any other trikes have letters stamped on them? 250r's, 200x's or others?? I can go check my 86 R and see if theres anything....

*Edit* Just went and checked out my R frame,,,nothing on there.

Nothin on my 250r, but there is a "1" stamped on my '85 Yamaha BW frame that isn't part of the vin #. Its up on the main backbone though.

BTW, AtcKowalski.....how did you change your name and get the "formerly known as" under there as well?

The 250SX got an "X" when the swingarm rubber boot got resealed - it was a service bulletin. That same model got another identifying marks somewhere when the CDI got changed. The original 85 CDI allowed for high revs that snapped the cranks.

What year is your 350X Dammit? That year must have had an issue or Service Bulletina dn when they fixed it, they marked it.

How the heck can we obtain all the Service Bulletins anyhow? Somebody has to have them all. I remember my dealer having a huge book with them all. The "SX cold start" was one of them and I have a copy of that one. But somebody must have them all by now?? I start a new thread!!

X was a common mark for Honda usually for a first recall on a lot of their ATVs and the bulletins would tell you where to put it. And yes, it's true what Brapp said about the 350X motors being marked for tech schools. I can verify this from when I was in MMI back in 00. They had about 50 of those X motors. You had to completely take them apart, measure everything to check if it was within spec, heli-coil whatever needed (trust me they needed it after being assembled a million times) and then put them all back together and torture test em. Half wouldn't start at the end of the clinic for various reasons. That would seriously affect your grade.

The backside of all the 85-86 250R rear brake pedals have something stamped into them, I think its "C R F" if I remember correctly but I'm not sure.

I was told that any stamp on a frame ,,means that it was a factory reject.. something on the frame needed to be corrected before it left the factory..

Actually, the way Honda usually did it was the parts that were used to correct a factory defect were sent to dealers and had an x already punched in them. Production units that had recieved the parts before they left the factory usually were marked with white paint to show the problem had already been corrected. If you recieved a bulletin from Honda and your unit had the white paint on it they would tell you to punch an x on those parts anyway in a specified location because it was permanent. This was their procedure for anything frame related.
