This question isnt about my 86x, its about my friends 84. So today we had the great idea to replace the clutch plates and everything was going well until we got inside the case. Theres the circular (oil rotor)? right infront of the clutch basket that needed to come off, after an hour with the impact driver the 3 little screws didnt budge so we drilled them out since he has plenty of replacement parts. inside of this hollow piece theres a nut that you need to remove off the shaft. Its not like the actual nut on my 86, its a weird nut that you need to use a spanner wrench to get off. It says in the clymer manual that you need a special honda tool to remove it. So after about a hour of hitting it with a chisel it still wasnt moving. What are some ways to get this damn thing off? Is it reverse threaded or something? The honda tool would not work now by the way since the grooves are gone. I know exactly how to replace the clutch, just this nut is retarded and impossible to remove :mad:

The 86 dioesn't have it and is reverse thread.

The 85 I THINK is right thread, check DAMMITS manuals to be sure.

I used a 15/16 socket and ground down the areas until I had the 4 prongs. But, it has to be made well!! and an impact gun takes it off allot easier than a wrench.

I went to buy that tool but they wanted like 32$.

I made that tool with a 15/16 and used a rubber mallet on the rachet to break it loose.

How did you get something in there to grind it down? A screw driver could barely fit inside of it, so did you have to cut the rotor off to do it? That wouldnt be a problem since theres a good one to put it.

I have that Honda tool!! it cost me like $14 from the honda dealer. Comes in handy! since its the same locknut for the clutch and that oil rotor.

i dont know how you would get that oil rotor off either. i had to drill one of my screws out and the rest came out with a manual impact wrench.

i would get the tool and get it done right. you know you have to torque that back down! i wish i had that universal holder so i didn't have to use penny's in the clutch gears to stop the motor from turning.

You have to use an impact screwdriver that you hit with a hammer to loosen those screws.

I use an old gear I chopped in half for a gear holder.

My mistake though, the socket is 13/16 - I gotta take a picture.

I had service Honda quote me that tool and I swear it was 27$?? Still a ver good investment at any cost!!

Thanks for all this tips, We used a impact driver to try to break the screw out with no luck, but decided to use a drill bill to take them out. Worked real well anyway and left all the treads intact. The thing is he actually took one of thoes little nuts off with a screw driver by tapping it off before. But after a long time it just got smashed up and the 3 little grooves were worn off. Im not sure if the honda tool would work now? Next time im around there ill take a pic of it and show you what I mean. I think grinding the socket down would be a good idea, Ill check it out and see whats left of the nut tomorrow hopefully.

Years ago, I actually smashed off the oil rotor just to get that nut - never said I was always half smart, lol.....

One thing with those impacts, those screws take the small phillips bit and it has to fit perfect. I have 3 different phillip bit sizes for that thing.

I'm pretty sure I used a die grinder with a cutoff wheel to make that up but if the tool is that cheap I'd grab it. I gotta punch that 07716-0020100 in at Service Honda....
