just Google search the exact error you get. Works for me very often.

You are missing a system file OR the hard drive is finally taking a dive.. Does the computer make any funny sounds while it's attempting to load?

I had the same problem as you a couple years ago, and the same situation as well. My hd would continuosly reboot at the startup screen. Unfortunately I was never able to pull anything from it, all I could do was swap in another hd and take the loss.
Maybe you could hook the hd up to another system and try to read from another pc as a secondary drive. I dont know what else you could do, like I said I could never manage to get mine straightened out.

You can get a HDD case for using the HDD externally. Make sure it is the right one because the laptop and desktop HDD's are differnt sizes and most of them are for the regular size HDD.
Anyway, if your OS is cracked out and there is nothing physically wrong wtih your HDD then you can do this and get your info. Then you can wipe the drive and use it for a backup system so you dont have this problem again HA HA HA H

Think of it this way, if it's just your system and your HD is good you're lucky! Mine died so I just lost a nice 200gb storage system to encompass my new 500gb lol
Make sure you know which HD you have... Most likely IDE/ATA

You can use a linux livecd environment to get data off the drive. You'll need a little patience to do it though. Read through this article (http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/) and see if it helps.
I've been able to recover gigs worth of data from busted drives using linux for years. It's really not all that bad (even for a non-linux user).
Good luck!!

Man, what a great post. And it worked too!! Great information I'll be sure to save, I still have a hard drive kickin around with allot of information from years ago (when I was married) it would be fun to look at it all again. I never knew you could recover stuff this way.... THANKS!!
