I got an 85 tecate and 83 kx250 lower ends for my next engine. Just wondering if there would be any advantages in running the kx gears? Has anyone tried it? The kx transmission should have a better top speed but at what cost I wonder? I’m wanting to build a drag engine. Any thoughts?

The ratios are the same.. the kxt's just have a stronger 4th and 5th

Justin, transmission ratios are the exact same. Difference is right off the crank. The kx crank gear is 1 tooth bigger, and the gear on the clutch basket is smaller. The kx and kxt components wont interchange. Use one or the other. I use the kxt setup, as the kx would offer some long pulls through the gears. And hard launches would prolly turn into a bog. Even with final drive gearing changes.

Wow.. I never noticed the primary ratio was different... That is good to know

Damn Ed, you nailed it I was looking on kawasaki.com and noticed that 4th and 5th gears are differen't. Seeing as how i have a good crank for the kx I might give it a shot but like you said it may just bog.

The cranks themselves are the same.

Different crank gear, I see. I'm trying to salvage the ignition system too. Hope it isn't too far gone.

Well I got started on my engine today only to find out that my kx motor is acctually a kxt . In a way I'm dissapointed because I wanted to try the kx system I have and 18 tooth primary gear and the kx is supposed to be 20. Oh well, Guess I'll never get to try the kx250 engine.

You can still use the KX ignition...

Yeah, it looks like it would still work. I've got a cdi from an 83 kx. What threw me off on the whole thing is it was listed as kx, had the kx ignition and came with a kx cylinder. Perhaps it's an old JW replica engine that somone put together many years ago.
