Well to be honist, the oem shocks were junk! The bore of the aluminum shock body wears from front to back, and makes it oval shaped. Then sealhead can't seal and do it's job, then the shaft itself always wears throught the chrome, and tolerances are lost again. These sort of problems are correctible, but it will cost you a fortune. And if shock body is worn to badly, it's junk. 300ex shock has a durable steel body, with a larger shaft. And a nice bump stop. Just get a low hour or a new take off shock and enjoy. Way better than the cheap and flimsy oem.

I agree, I never had any luck with the stockers. I want to try that ex shock on my next project.

What will work for the 86 Tecate? They are junk as well but I don't know of a direct bolt on?

i want to say that a 300ex will work on the 86 as well, looking at both the suspension set ups on both models, they are very similar.

i dont think a 300ex shock will work very good becase the shock is valved diffrient, spring rate is probably diffrent, length, and so on. all your doing is rigging up the suspension. a 300ex shock will never work as well as a rebuilt oem tecate shock becase its desined and tuned for the ex, not a lighter 2-stroke trike. it will only work better than a blown out and worne oem, but wont compare to a rebuilt oem. the only other shock i would get is a works, but im not up to spend 5-600$ on one

I disagree, stock 84-85 shocks are too bouncy:Bounce IMO. I tried Lope's t3 with ex shock and it was sweet. I use a works on my 85 and it blows compaired to the raptor or 300ex. You would be hard pressed to find an oem that's even worth rebuilding. Personaly, I will never go back to stock but it's all in what you want.

Actually, the 300ex spring is a higher rate, and the valving on the compression and rebound is set by the Honda and built by showa. These are high quality shocks. The oem Tecate spring is very weak and only sacks more with time. There is no rigging of anything when installing a diffent shock in place of a worn out oem. You are simply replacing unit with a far superior piece. I've run this setup for over 2 years and have used it in the dunes as well as Smith Road MX. New showa units are superior to the old KYB ones. Especially 23 year old ones. As long as the center to center is within 1/4 inch, your good to go. This would hold true with 86-87 t-3's as well.

well i just had my oem already rebuilt so im going to see how well it works out. if i come across a cheap 300ex shock i will probably give it a try. im concidering selling it soon so i might just leave it as is with the oem.
hey, does anyone know how much psi of nitrogen to charge the oem shock? it would be a great help so i can slap it back on the tecate to see how it does.
