well she is just about done i have a few more odds and ends to button up but overall this is it, definitley one of a kind this is built 100% to my customers vision of what he wanted a vintage racer to look like . we ended up swapping out the rear tires for a more low profile 8 inch wheel tire looks more period correct now , the tank is all hand striped evn goes underneath the tank , I am doing a sister to this bike next for him using a first generation 200X 83-85 4 stroker that should be a fun one also I will post more pics when its off the lift done Mike

Hi Guys,
yes its a DG head , I stripped it and had it reanodized , the frame is not gusseted but all the unneccessary mounts and brackets were machines off for a super clean look . we have an old school Honda bar pad coming in for it and working on getting some plastic numbers foir the front vented plate and she should be done being picked up the first of the year. Mike the tank look's fantastic,I really like what you did with the machine ,and the gold accent's really give it the vinage 70's-80's look. And a little bling-bling too..Very nice work, and I am sure plenty of hour's.

Beautiful job Mikey!!

Although it isn't an OEM restore, I think it's one awesome machine and being unique is better than OEM sometimes.

Like you said, it's getting tougher to find buyers for these restores. Parts are hard enough to justify, but the labor involved in such incredible restorations is even harder. I can barely charge friends 30$ an hour for work and they feel ripped, maybe thats why it's better to do work for customers rather than friends....

But, it's just so great that someone with talent like yourself is actually willing to do this. The majority of shops want to take in easier projects, shove them out the door and charge 85$ an hour for a half hearted repair. Nothing like the care and personal attention you provide.

Do you ever lie awake realizing how well you are truly accomplishing these restores? I mean - MUSEUM!!?? - Thats crazy, OCC and some of these other builders truly have nothing on you in my book!! I can't even imagine how you hooked up with the museum you built machines for. But it has to be some of the most satisfying feelings you could ever wish for.

I met you 10 years ago and didn't even know who I stumbled upon. I think you had your dad? or someone with you to pick up some ATC70 parts from me (I think that was it?) But back then, I just thought ATC's were old, junk and a dying breed. I couldn't have ever imagined that it could be what it is today and how much I love them.....again.

As far as I'm concerned, your stuff is television worthy. Your well worth your own space on TV. It's ok to restore a 30yo car but the ratings aren't there for an ATC?? Dam - I'm gonna write my senator and congressman. :w00t:

Some guys who figure out a way to make a part or restore something let it go to there head and feel like we owe them something. You don't project yourself that way and I want to say thanks for everything you contribute to the ATC community and let you know that we all truly appreciate everything you share with us!! :beer

Thanks DC
yup it has been about 10 years yea I bought an old US90 from you . my Dad still rides along with me on my road trips .
yes I am definitley not doing all this for the money although I am not suffering. I have a side business doing light trucking, bobcat and excavating work and could make in 3 days what i make doing a 4 week project in the shop but the drive i get from restoring is pretty incredible I never get sick of it I hope to one day expand out with employees etc with a big shop but for now I am happy with the way things are going. I am booking 1 year from now for any restoration work and have been doing work latley for some big players in the motocross world so things are definitley going in the right direction. thanks for all the nice comments and I will be sure to post some more of my projects in the future some cool stuff coming up take care Mike

Why didn't you post this with the one you started already?

He started another because Huffa crapped all over it.  LMAO!!! Sorry bud.. just kidding.:naughty:

Mike.. I absolutly love that but I aint too crazy about the tank. When you mentioned a custom paint job in the other thread I had something totally diffrent pictured in my head. To each his own I rekon. The rest of it is absolulty perfect!

Hi Chris 200x,
the tank is done exactley how the customer wanted he scetched me out a drawing and I painted off of that , He is extreamly happy with it thats all that matters right !! He is paying the Bill everyone has there own idea Mike

chris200x
12-16-2007, 05:54 PM
Yeah I remember reading that the owner had his own ideas. Nothing wrong with that at all. I guess the more I look at it the more I start to like it. It just wasnt what I expected exaclty.

Did this guy used to race back in the day and had a bike just like this.. or something he just dreamed up to display at the shop?

I think it looks great. Even though it's not what most consider custom today, for the era this represents, it is. Not many people had their own paint jobs in 82-83 and except for the factory guys, no one had a 250R that clean.

Man, if I ever hit the powerball, people are going to think I'm nuts for spending half of it in your shop. You don't need me to tell you your work is the best out there. That is very nice!
