I picked up another 85 model a couple of weeks ago. It just quit running on a buddy of mine when his kid was riding it, and hadn't ran till I got it.

I have searched here for threads and read the manual 3 times.

I cleaned the points and it fired up for about 20 seconds, sounded good, everything ok, then it died. Wouldn't start back, cleaned the points again and it ran for a while again, then died.

The kill switch is good.
Swapped the coil and plug wire off of my running 70, both were good.
Points gap is .012"
Continuity between black wire and ground with points held open.
Wiring is good.
New plug.
Coil ground is good.

I just cleaned the points super good, and no spark at all now.

The only thing left to check is the magneto, but I don't have a puller, yet.

I'm about to order a puller and points and condenser from DRatv, hoping that will work.

Any ideas? I'm all out!

Well, I figure the points are just worn out, so I got new points and condenser and fuzzy stuff coming in, hope to have it going by Christmas.

points should fix it, they go bad without warning sometimes. Its a cheap fix anyway.

Keep us posted, but that should fix it. Try gapping the points at .016 instead of .012

K, I'm about to start soldering. I'm double checking the thread on this on glamisdunes.com

Should the fuzzy stuff touch the magneto stud?

Well, my soldering SUCKS!

Got it put back together, checked for spark, had my hand on part of the plug, and about blew my elbow out, hehe.

Erratic, good spark, not enough to start the motor. Adjusted the timing 3 times, now no spark.

Gonna take it to a mechanic tomorrow to let him solder the condenser on good. I'm betting that is the problem now.

When it was sparking, it had MUCH stronger spark than my running 70.

It's alive!

I got a good soldering gun,and got the condenser done. Started right up, runs great!

I have $102.61 in the trike and parts! hehehe

This one is so much stronger than my other one, mainly cause the other one is running rich. I put a clamp on air filter on the other one and went up a jet size or 2 thinking it needed it, and it has never took full throttle with me on it, but I thought it was because it had 200#'s of ass on it, hehe.

Well, I'm gonna put the Lifan project on hold, till this motor lets go, or I just have to have more POWER! hehe

Can't wait to get home from work tomorrow and ride some more.

Thanks for all the help. Points and condenser and a good cleaning was all it needed, those coil contacts and the magneto were JUNKED up.
