Well I might trade a guy my 86X and 87X parts trike for a TRI Z. I just wana know if its a good trade. Im realy looking for a faster machine. Im a honda guy and would love to find another R but havnt found any close enough. If I do trade this guy, what should I know about Z's, what kind of things to look for. How do they compare to a liquid R?

What year Z (ex. Color)? With the Z it seems that people either love 'em or hate 'em. To me if it is a nice '86 Z I'd do the trade.

Parts are harder to find, BUT people are making new ones for many applications. MANY Banshee stuff intchanges as well for proper blingage :D

Fuel pumps and stators are the prone parts. Also the foot pegs bend easily

the reason I said '86Z was because the tripples are larger to accept forks that are the same diameter as a 250r (meaning better ride). I dont know about the '85.5 Z, but either way they are good bikes.

Is there enought meat on the 85 triples for me to bore them larger?

if you want to go that route just buy '86 tripples, then everything swaps. Thats my next route so I dont have that huge front tire

What kind of things tend to break? How reliable are the motors in them?

one weak spot is the kicker, be careful and don't get carried away trying to start it. They break off from the case. As far as reliability, it's the same as anything else, depends on how you maintain it and how hard you beat on it.

never had a prob with mine for the month i rode it before i crashed it. like everyone sais fuel pumps and kick starters are the only real problems iv heard of. I had a 85x and there they arnt even in the same class, dont get me wrong the 200x is a awsome reliable bike but the z is a better all around ride.

ill probably get ripped on for saying that, but thats my thought on it.

Check the waterpump impeller.
Sometimes they come loose from the shaft and need to be drilled and pinned. (Before it overheats and spits the topend.)
Fixed mine before problems, all been good since.

get the honda parts are plentiful and alot cheaper. alot less maintence too.

Just speaking a voice of experience here,
I went from owning 3 86's Tri Z's to 2 Honda 250rs.
Main reasons for switching-
Waterpump seal failure
Waterpump failure
Cracked cases from kicking it
Bent and snapped off triZ pegs
Alot less aftermarkter Support
No counterbalancer
Fuel Pump issues
Vibration

But the Tri Z is still a great ride, all depends what you wanna do with it. I can tell you when I race the 250r I beat the living snot outa it, And without a doubt it takes it no questions asked and still proves to be reliable as sunset. Proper maintence and lack of care always come into play with machines that have been preowned, but you cant go wrong with either.
The 86 200x is far superior to its relative models (83-85) and is a badass bike.

Id go honda personally, but hey what do I know?

I like the way the Tri-Z looks but judging by what I have read for years on this board, they aren't nearly as reliable as the Honda 250R.

To each his own, but I HATE mechanical failures. I've had Honda's for 10 years now and I have never broken down - ever. I've gotten flats, broke offf skid plates and snapped cables but other than that, I have never had a breakdown.

If my case broke from kickin it over, I'd be pissed. If my waterpump died and blew my top end I'd be pissed.

I wanna RIDE BABY!!!

I love my 86 200X, it's light, fast and handles awesome!! But if you want speed, you need a 250R.....
