My 1984 Honda 200S is running rich as a pig, and I can't figure it out. I've only had it a short while, and of all the bikes etc. I've owned, this thing is giving me the worst carb troubles.
I have sprayed an entire can of Gumout through this carb. Took the float bowl off, looked at the floats, everything seems allright.
I have confirmed the stock mainjet (size 100) is still in the carb.
I put in a brand new NGK spark plug, rode it down the street and back, light to mid throttle mostly (No WOT), it ended up stalling. Pulled the plug, black as night. Carbon fouled.
In looking at my owners manual that came with the trike, I adjusted the low speed richness at the nominal 2 1/4 turns out from tight. Ran down street, plug black, carbon fouled.
Cleaned plug, turned it to 1 3/4 turns out. Made it down the street and back, stalled, plug black. No difference.
I was going to turn the low speed rich adjustment to 1/2 turn out, and see if this would lean out the A/F ratio, and then I noticed something.....
After looking at the carb off the bike, looking down the carb throat, and scratching my head for a while, I noticed the brass screw thingy that the throttle cable "plugs" into on the top of the screw off top of the carb has some adjustment. When the throttle is closed and the carb slide is in the "closed" position, there is a small amount of cross sectional area not blocked by the slide that still lets air flow for idle purposes. If I screw this brass screw in, it moves the slide "down" in the closed throttle position, allowing less airflow in the closed throttle position, which in my mind would make it run "richer".
Question: 1). Could this be causing my rich running problem?
2). There is no mention of adjustment of where the carb slide should be in the "closed" position, ie, HOW MUCH CROSS SECTIONAL OPENING SHOULD THERE BE LOOKING DOWN THE AIR INLET "THROAT" IN THE CLOSED THROTTLE POSITION? How should I adjust this? With the Carb off and looking down the throat, I was thinking of holding the thumb control in the WOT position, so that the carb slide is open and pulled upward, and adjusting this brass screw that the accelerator cable sits in so that the bottom of the slide is just slightly above the top of the incoming air "throat". And then I'd put the "low speed rich adjustment" back to 2 1/4 turns out from stop lock, and see how it runs.
3). What do you guys suggest? Maybe my float plate is bent, causing it to dump extra fuel? Though I have seen no excess gasoline is running out any of my overflow hoses, which I've seen before when floats dumping too much fuel. I am stumped.
4). Is there a carb rebuild kit for this?
5). If nothing works, I am just considering buying a new carb for it. Where would you guys suggest I buy a new carb (Service Honda? I bought all my stuff for my XR250R there). Any idea on cost for a new carb ? Lastly, I read that the 200X carb is an upgrade. Would this work ok for this 200S, which has stock engine/cam? Or would the 200X carb result in a lot of low end/mid range torque loss (probably larger carb), and just give it extra rev on top? I really like the torque on this trike, and wouldnt' want to get rid of the torque characteristics for top end power.
THERE IS ICE ON THE LAKES HERE IN MICHIGAN, AND I NEED MY TRIKE SOON FOR THE ICE FISHING SEASON TO PULL MY SHANTY, HEATER AND BEER AND BBQ ON THE ICE!!!!! THERE IS LOTS OF FISH TO BE CAUGHT, LOTS OF BEER TO BE DRANK, AND A GOOD TIME TO BE HAD, BUT I NEED MY 200S RUNNING. Also couple weeks left of bow hunting, may need to drag a deer out of the woods with this thing!!
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
